Questions for anyone using Labradar

I have both external triggers. The Piet is the only one that will work with .22LR.
When you mentioned "both", did you mean you didn't get the LR external microphone to work, or the JKL trigger to work?

I guess I have been lucky cause I have had no troubles with triggering on rimfire or airgun.

Either way, bullets are fast, but not so fast that a internal or external trigger is too slow. The speed of sound in air is slower than the speed of sound in metal, but over a few inches once that shock wave hits the trigger it is all faster than the time it takes the bullet to get out in front of the radar.

I know that there are many comparisons online using Magneto Speed and regular chronos compared with LR, but not sure those comparisons were with recoil trigger systems, not just the Labradar built in trigger.

Anyone ever did it?

I could not get the JKL Precision trigger to reliably work with rimfire. It works fine with centerfire. The Piet will pick up all my shots with rimfire if I mount it (magnetically) on the barrel right in front of the receiver. My rimfire rifles do weigh over ten pounds and do not move much in the bags.

Just another question. When using an external recoil activated trigger, I am wondering how far down range the bullet is when the Labradar is actually picking up the bullet? I would think there would have to be a tiny bit of lag time, no?

I suspect the lag would be roughly the same no matter what you use to trigger it. Since the radar beam is a cone originating at roughly the center of the unit, there will be a delay in the bullet entering the beam anyway. The Labradar uses the barrel-to-unit offset to estimate where the bullet enters the beam, then back-calculates muzzle velocity. Downrange velocities are what was measured.

Thank you, I called Labradar and that is exactly what they told me. Although he did say that depending on the placement of the recoil trigger the lag could vary slightly, but really no way to confirm

Unfortunately they don’t make the flat plate base anymore. Too bad, as it was the right height for my purposes. The newer tripod that they make now will be too high for me to comfortably shoot. I am trying to find a gimbal tripod top to make a base that will work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
My next decision will be what kind of triggering device to get. I don’t really want to go with something that requires velcro for a recoil trigger and the magnetic one is questionable as to where it should be fastened. I was thinking of the microphone one, as there will be no one else shooting to give false triggers.
Thoughts?
This is the one I use. Works great.

QUAD BASE. FOR USE WITH A LAB RADAR.

A little pricey though

The placement isn't as critical as far as vertical as you to center of the bore as you would think, especially when using the external trigger. while shooting prone I mount it on my bipod and place it over my rifle just infant of my scope and shoot under the unit. I even do this on a bench if its not windy. In fact LR even sell a mount called a Quad pod now witch is made to do this exact thing except its better than using a tripod because it has 4 legs. I have shot many rounds through the LR with this setup and it works great, especially when shooting a rifle with a brake, I really think it save on wear and tear on the unit from excessive muzzle blast. I know a couple guys that have worn to their LR from shooting big guns with brakes. This is the guy who as far as I know built the first Quad Pod and was selling them for a while.

Well, yesterday used the LR for the first time. It was 70 degrees outside so I basically had to shoot and wait 10-15 minutes between shots so as to not over heat the barrel.
i didn’t use the Piet recoil trigger at all and all my shots recorded except 2 which I forgot to arm. The app worked great on my iphone. I am very impressed and happy with the LR.

The only problem I had, turned out not to be a problem at all. It happened after lunch when I started mr second round of shooting after turning the LR off. I was looking at my phone after turning the power on and my phone kept searching for a new device as the LR wasn’t recognized. It turned out that all I had to do was open up the app and it worked.

BTW, I purchased the quad base from Arco Machine also. It is in fact pricey, but works great with a ball mount tripod mounted between that and the LR. Got me to the right height and made it quite simple to aim the device. I would recommend going that route.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to answer my questions and pass along their insights on using this

I have had several mounts. Matt Owens at Arkco Machine makes the best by far!

For bench work you can mount the quad base directly to the Labradar. That way it will fit in the soft case with the quad mount attached. All the aiming and height setting are overrated. Just set the Labradar on the bench 6" from the barrel and behind the muzzle and use an external trigger.

This is the way!
