Question pertaining firing pin spring (Remington 700)

Gentlemen,

Is it normal for firing pin spring to look like a (s) when removed from the bolt? I ask this question because my 308 spring is straight while my friend's is curved (S-style). When I place the spring back into the bolt you can feel it hitting the inside bolt. Any info will be Greatly Appreciated.

Its very normal, factory rifles us the most cost effective spring they can get, hence the s shape. They are replaceable though, straighter springs make for a quicker lock time, and smoother operation in the bolt. Hope it helps. And I think I am right, but could be very misguided.

Just replace that snakey looking factory spring with a aftermarket spring.
Banging around inside the bolt body is not good for accuracy....

+1, Preacher. Also, friction against FP rod and bolt bore can be considerable and impair impact energy and locktime.

Never understood why Remington allowed so little clearance between FP and bore diameters.

I took your advise and ordered a CS spring from Tubb's. After I read all that I decided I probably needed a new one too.

Does anyone know where I can get a aftermarket firing pin spring for my Remington 788 .308 bolt? I have a Timney trigger installed but closing and lifting is hard and sticky. Thanks for any and all help.

I like gre-tan. Light pin faster spring. The Remington's with the j lock is when they came out with the crappy spring. I always replace the whole assembly when I buy a new remmy. My.02

I took the lazy way out. I just replaced the entire firing pin/spring/cocking piece assembly with a Gre-Tan.

I feel better so I'm sure it's working better than the factory unit 8) 8)
