Question on Shilen "drop in" bbls for Savage and 6br

I'm looking very hard at a Shilen "drop in" bbl for my Savage. I was wondering if there's any issues with the Shilen cut chambers and Lapua brass. I read on the 6br page that the Lapua brass runs a bit bigger in the web area. Anyone with one of these bbls who can comment please?

It will be my first try at a 6br, but I'm looking for something else to take the place of my 243 win bbl.

Thanks.

I have purchased several Shilen pre-fits from Jim at NSS and two Shilens 6BRs. Both have no issues chambering any of the Lapua brass I have used. At least 3 different lots of brass. I haven't made a chamber cast of either of the 6BR barrels, so I can't tell you the actual measurements of the chamber. I can tell you both are exception shooters. Can't go wrong for the Shilen for the money in my opinion. I have Kriegers, PacNors, Lothar Walters (sp?), and I like the Shilens best. That's my opinion. If there is an issue, Shilen will make it good. Good consumer service and great people. I have made it to the Shilen Swap meet a couple of time and got to tour the shop and meet some of the guys.

Luck with your barrel, Tim

I have one from jim as well and it shoots 105gr anything great!!! he is great to deal with highly recommend buying from him! davey

What little I have talked with Jim, I would consider him to be a great guy to deal with. I just ordered a McGowen 6mmbr from him last weekend since he is out of the Shilens. I hope I didn't go terribly wrong by going with the way I did, but I was impatient.

I've bought 3 barrels and 2 rifles from Jim in the past. I've been very happy each time. I was looking over changing from the 243 win to the 6br, and just asking about what I've read on the 6br page. I was planning on buying one of Jim's small shank 30" bull Shilen barrels, but he's sold out of them now.

I think I may wait until he has them back in stock. I really want the longer bbl and heavier profile. I was mainly wondering if the Shilen cut chambers had any problems with clearance and the "fatter" Lapua brass?

I'm new on this forum (have "lurked" here for quite a while), but have been on the savageshooters forum for a while now.

I've got one of Shilens 30" 6BR small shank barrels in 1-8 and it chambers and shoots very well. I'm using Lapua and have had no problems with it.

It is best to call Jim and just go ahead and order the barrel you want in the configuration that you want and have it drop shipped directly from Shilen. If you have a specific chambering spec that you want Shilen to follow, they will do it, if it is available. Save yourself $20.00 to boot! Two big thumbs up for Jim at Northlander Shooters Supply!
