Question for those that own a 8-80x scope.

First I want to say I have never looked through a March 8-80x power scope. I own a few 10-50x60 sightron lll scopes and really like them. I have had sightron convert a couple of these 10-50x60 scopes from fine duplex to a thicker line duplex and I think a little bigger dot ( cannot remember ).
I have always wanted to buy a 80x scope but was wondering if I was to buy a used 80x scope or even a new scope if I could get a duplex that would have just a little thicker lines ? I plan on putting this scope on a 6.5 creedmoor for long range shooting and maybe a long range PD. I know mirage is bad on these but that’s ok. You only live once. Thanks MD

You should check out the reticles that are offered for the March-X 8-80X56 at the March website. There are two types of reticles: wire and etched. If you were to buy a used 8-80X56 make sure you know which type of reticle it has. March has a service where they will replace the SFP etched reticle with any other etched SFP reticle, or the wire reticle with any of the other wire reticles. They will NOT swap a wire reticle with an etched reticle or the other way around. So wire to wire, etched to etched.

You can view the various SFP reticles here:

For example, I bought my March-X 5-50X56 with the MTR-2 reticle. After 6 years, mid-way through my 60s, I could no longer see the lines and got March to swap the MTR-2 with the MTR-5 reticle. A couple years later I acquired a March-X 10-60X56 HM and made sure to order it with the MTR-5 reticle (I call it the old geezer reticle.) I've had the 10-60X56 for 18 months now and it's great shooting with it. I see the reticle perfectly.

So choose wisely and have fun. If you have more questions about the 8-80X56, ask away.

I don't own one but have looked through one at 500 yards at a shot target, 6mm. It was bright sun with a lot of mirage. A lot of guys could not see holes, I was using a Sightron GE and could see holes with a bit of looking. The 80x March had a small dark field of view. But, the taget and holes looked like they were 3 yards in front of me. Not pretty but very effective. On a dark dreary day I am not sure 80x would be effective, but I don't have first hand knowledge of that condition.

I've never had the chance to look through one at 600+.
With a March any warranty or repair it has to go back to Japan.
That was the deal breaker for me.

I own one. I used it Sunday for the 200 Meter portion of a 2 day shoot in VT. I had it cranked at 80 and it wasn't bad. There was a little mirage but nothing I couldn't handle. March scopes do not amplify mirage the way a NF 15-55 Comp does. The glass is so clear that it does exactly that. While the old March scopes weren't the brightest scopes to come down the pike, I never had a POI issue with one. I had a 36-55 quit on me last May 2020 while I was at a Match in SC. It was like looking thru chicken soup. I sent it back to Japan in May of 2020 and got it back in March of 2021. They told me they had to replace the eyepiece because it was screwed up. Refreshing that a company admits that their scope screwed up, unlike Leupold and NF which they will tell you that they found nothing wrong with it but now it works like it was suppose to once you got it back. It magically fixed itself. That is the reason I own 13 of them. I had a Kahles K1050 screw up on me. It wasn't bright and clear at all. Kahles told me that they also replaced the eyepiece, again another company that told me their scope was at fault. I still have a mess of other scopes that are mounted on some bench rifles like some NF Comps but I prefer the Marches over any of the others.

I use the March 8-80 x56 at 600 yards shooting F-class. I rarely back off from full power. When the mirage is at its worst I’ll back off to 60 power. At full power I can see the score rings and know where I’m holding in the X ring. I switched from a Sightron 10-50 X60 which I still own two of. My scores have gone up since switching. A lot of clean scores with high x counts. The markings on the turrets of the Sightron are too small for my eyes to see without reading glasses. The March turrets are large with larger markings and easier to make elevation changes. Some of the ranges have targets in the shadows first thing in the morning but the scope is bright enough to see the f-class x-ring. I also think the mirage shows up better in the March to see wind direction at the target. Also on full power the field of view isn’t very wide. Usually the range has the target number posted directly on my target so I don’t need to see the large lane number which is above my target. I’ll usually adjust the scope to 10 power while setting up then crank up the power on the scope to fine tune the alignment. Very happy with the March.
