Question on Sightron 10-50x60 reticle

I am getting close to buying a sightron lll 10-50x60 Scope. Not sure on going new or used yet. I gave a question..... On Sightron website they have the 10-50x60 scopes with a WIDE duplex Reticle and one with a NARROW Duplex Reticle. Can you tell me application for each of these Reticle , what would be best for long range shooting , 1000 plus yards both on target shooting and prairie dog hunting ? Please state your position why. I am new to long range shooting and can only afford to do this once. I might consider the Reticle with dot and cross hairs but I want to know about the wide and narrow Reticle for right now only on the 10-50x60 Scope sightron . I am sure I don’t want the MOA type recticles because just to busy for my eyes ( had detached retina last year so less clutter is better for me. Thanks. Marty

i would think it would be personal preference...unless the substensions at a given power match a measurement you need to gauge width or height. They give the values at min and max powers...rsbhunter

The sightron website was down all day for some reason but if you look at these 2 reticles on their website they sure are easy to look at. I think they would work great for prairie dog hunting. Your eyes go right to the cross. I would like you guys to look them on their website and give me your thoughts. Must be some reason that it is not a popular reticle.... wondering why that is the case ? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Marty

They were and to alot of extent THE reticle for hunting scopes.....and the reason is as you stated, they draw your focus to the center...for pd shooting, I would go to the wide duplex, as finding a small target at a long distance , I would want more "open" crosshairs..'may look at the fine cross hairs, though, in low light or shadows, they might be hard to find .....just my thoughts.....Rsbhunter

When Sightron introduced those two duplex reticles last year on the 10-50x, I shook my head and wondered why they did that. Not the type of reticle anyone really seeks out for long range shooting or varmint shooting on high power scopes. Duplex reticles make sense on big game hunting rifles where you have to find the crosshair quickly and acquire the target. Not so much on targets and unaware varmints.

My favorite of the Sightron reticles for sage rats are the dots and the MOA-2. My eyes don't see the fine cross hairs very well so I avoid those. You ruled out the MOA reticle, and I understand why. The MOA-H version is way to busy for me, but I do like the MOA-2. You should consider the target dot reticle. Between the two you mentioned though, I would go with the wide duplex.

My 10-50x has the MOA-2 reticle with the exposed tactical turrets. I do like those turrets cause I like to click for elevation and there is no chance of losing the darn caps.

I also bought the 10-50 MOA-2 like ss427, and I like it alot.....BUT, I wish I had gotten the IR version...while setting up the mounting of the scope, on a black bullseye, the center dot would be hard to distinguish from the bull. Now, I am getting older, but still have good unaided vision. I know at the time, I didn't think I wanted to spend the extra money, but now wish I had. I am getting ready to order my second Sightron, either a 10-50 or 8-32, and which ever reticle I get will be illuminated..May not ever need it, but...... by the way, Sightron scopes really impress me....Rsbhunter

Guys thanks for the advice. I am also thinking about the ILLum reticle. I had detached Retina last year. Did not turn out well for me. Shooting eye. 3 laser operations and $33,000 later can see 25/20 with glasses. But better then the morning I woke up ( pitch black nothing ) I sure wish sightron made the LR dot with ILLum dot. That would be perfect for me. Last year I bought a weaver 8-32x50 classic from Natchez on sale for $319.00. Ok scope for money. ILLum dot. Sure not a Sightron and not sure how well it will track. But I can see the ILLum dot real good. Marty

Well, I'm sorry to hear about your situation, but it turned out better than the worst case scenario....I am really happy to be in decent health, but now will use all the help I can get......so my next scope (s) I buy WILL be illuminated....if I don't use it, then whoever I leave them to can....rsbhunter
