SIGHTRON III 10-50X60 QUESTION

I want to buy a Sightron III 10-50X60 for my Tikka 243 cal. I will be shooting very long range coyotes , prairie dogs and steel targets. Really a truck gun for long , long shots. If see them I am shooting at them. Anyway I am looking to buy the reticle cross hairs with the dot. Just wondering at my age of 56 and wear glasses would I have trouble using this reticle for shooting coyotes etc ? I just don't care for the MOA AND MILLDOT scopes. I am just to old to learn how to use them. I will have Sightron make me a drop down turret with yardage marks on the turret. I spoke with SIGHTON CORP REP today and he thought i would be happier with the Sightron 8-32x56 scope because it has a bigger dot on cross hairs ? I REALLY HAVE MY HEART SET ON THE 10-50X60 ( YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE HA HA HA ). I think if i go with a smaller power scope there is much better options for the money then a SIGHTRON in a 8-32 power scope. what say you ? Martyd

You will do just fine with the 10-50 and MOA 2 cross and dot. use it for 1K steel and the targets are no where near the size of a yote. I'm 70 and works great for me.

LitBoy...will I was thinking about just the crosshairs with the dot. I think dot is only 1/8 dia ? just wondering how bad it would be using late in afternoon. marty

I have 2 of those scope with that reticle(fine cross hair target dot)...for targets they are great for hunting I do not like that reticle...hard to pickup the dot/cross hairs sometimes when hunting. The scopes are great.

Will do. I could just use the dot and really use the moa marks on scope I guess. I need to read up and see if I am smart enough to make it work. Martyd

I shoot alot of Sightron scopes and I would suggest against the 10-50 for what you want to do.

For field shooting and LR rocks and gongs, I would suggest the SIII6-24X50 family. The glass is superb and you will have no issue putting the central dot of the LRMOA reticle on a coffee cup sized object at 1000yds. We use these to shoot beyond 1 mile.

I feel that for hunting, field of view is so very important. I compete with SIII and SVSS 10-50.. even at 1000yds, the field of view is very small and be a huge pain for hunting. Then these scopes are very big and need to be mounted very high... that can be a problem with hunting stocks.

Have a look at the new STAC 3-15X42 and 4-20X50... unless you plan on shooting predators beyond 800yds, these scopes have plenty of clarity and mag to get it done.

If doing alot of low light hunting, the STAC2.5-17.5X56 is amazing in low light.

With quality glass, you do not need alot of mag to see and aim precisely.

I don't think you will be very happy once you start trying to mount and use a scope that big on a predator rifle.

What Mysticplayer said is spot on. I have a Sightron 10-50 on my FTR rifle and imo it's way to big and cumbersome for a hunting rifle. Barlow

Don't know what your definition of very long is, but the 10x50 only has 50 MOA of total movement for consideration.

I run 5.5-22x50 Nightforces for anything 1K and beyond. They have twice the adjustment, at 100 MOA on tap, & sitting on 40 MOA bases.

Also, the size of the dot, or any reticle for that matter, can be a detriment if it's too big. You need to pay attention to what the reticle subtends at distance. I can hold on a milk jug at a mile plus and not cover up the target with the NP-R1 reticle.

guys I only live about 1 1/2 hours from BROWNELLS new WAREHOUSE and know they have a retail store in the front. Very impressive retail store ! lots of guns and Pistols , Rifles , Shotguns. but you can pick them all up off the racks even pistols THAT IS THE GREAT THING. All guns on racks with small cable holding them. but you can really handle them good. Lots different brands and models. store is set up perfect for a customer to look and feel the guns

Anyway they pulled a SIGHTRON 10-50X60 WITH DOT ON CROSS HAIRS out of Warehouse for me. very nice scope but after looking through it cross hairs are just to small for me at age 56 to see threw for both prairie dogs and coyotes and target shooting. You folks were right on that reticle. They are getting the MOA 2 reticle in stock in a few weeks and even one with red dot that I am going to back and look through. I am new to the moa 2a dot reticle really don't understand how it works........ Could some one tell me how the reticle works ???????? the knobs are in inches right.... AND are the dots on scope 2 inches apart , so how do you use the reticle with the MOA knobs?????

In this example let's say I see a prairie dog out 500 yards after I use my range finder to get yardage. What is the next step I would take using this reticle on a SIGHTRON 10-50X60 MOA 2A SCOPE RETICLE TO SHHOT THE PD ? Thanks. Marty

I always liked Sheels because they displayed all their long guns on the floor and you could pick them up and look them over. Don't know if they still do that or not.

I have the MOA2reticle and think it's great. The dot is easy to see. It stands alone in the center but it's bracketed by the vert/horiz. cross hairs so it's very easy to pick up. It's a 1/4 min dot so it only covers 2.5 inches at 1000 yds.
The reticle hash marks serve two purposes. One is they act as a range finder. You use a mathematical formula to measure a target and the solution gives you the range. Formula is size of the target in inches divided by the minutes of angle the target covers times 100 will give you the range in yards. On the reticle , the distance between the hash marks is 2 minutes. The small hash marks are 2 minutes and the large hash marks are 4 minutes. Everything in the reticle has a measurement but I won't go into that here. Besides, you have a rangefinder so you wouldn't be ranging with the scope anyway.
The other use of the hash marks is for hold over or hold off. In a sense they work as auxiliary cross hairs to work as aiming points if you know how much wind drift you have to account for.
After your first shot, take note of where on the reticle the shot hit. Then use that point as your aiming point for the second shot.
I have mildot scopes from three different manufacturers and I like the moa-2 from Sightron better than any of them.

I have a few of the S3's. The 6-24x50 I like for my prairie dog shooting and general targets. For the better accuracy and to be able to see more precise target several hundred yards away, I like the 8-32x56 which I have on a 30 and 20 bench rest. I have the 10-50x60 on my 338 Lapua TRG 42. I figure if I can shoot therefore I want to be able to see that far. One thing to consider is you can always crank the 50 power down to 10. Hard to crank a 24 power any higher! They are all in the lrmoa-2 reticle. It has a fine dot in the center, and in all reality I do not know precisely how to use the reticle system, but it is nice to have if I ever need it. I also have several Vortex scopes, which are not too bad and have an awesome warranty, but aren't near the scope as sightrons.
My neighbor has his grain bins about 200 yards away and with the 50 power scope cranked all the way up, the center dot is the size of one of the half inch bolt heads.
At a quarter mile, the difference between the 6-24 and 8-32 Scopes is not huge, but there is a difference. If you truly are trying to shoot out to a 1000 and the gun is capable, the 10-50 would be what I would go with. Like others have said, it is big and cumbersome, but if you know that going into it and use it for its intended purpose, then it should be the right tool to use!
