Question for the minds

I had a custom SAC rifle built last year that got me to a mid range expert classification in my first year shooting ftr.

Have a few things come up that I might need to sell it since I have over 5k invested in the rifle alone. It does shoot 1/4moa at 100 with my 185juggs over varget.

I picked up a tikka in 223 1:8 24" barrel that shoots about 1/2moa with factory at 100 so I can probably get it better with my handloads.

Do I just start shooting the 223 and sell the 308?

I did shoot a 575/600 last year with a savage f/tr in .223 so I know they are capable.

I guess I am trying to decide if I should shoot the factory tikka or get the ftr from savage, but if I get the savage should I get the 223 or 308? I have the components for both. We do have a 1k range with our 600 mid.

I know overall shooting the 223 is going to be cheaper to shoot, which is what I really need it to be right now.

Looks to me like if you sell the rifle you'll get far less for it than you have invested
A good shooting used .223 will probably run a minimum of $1200 all tricked out.
So let's say you sold your 5k rifle for 3k (quick sale) or $3500 .... no way to know right now.
You spend $1200 - $1500 on a satisfactory but not optimum performing rifle that you can expect to be 50% less expensive to reload.
Short term you've only got $2000 in your pocket and your overall net worth in rifles has dropped from $5000 to $1500 - a loss of $3500.
I'd never spend $3500 to make $2000 .....
In your position I would do everything in my power to hold on to the rifles I have, work myself to death paying off whatever obligation tempted me to consider selling the rifle (even if I had to stop shooting until the clouds of debt rolled away) and recover once the sky clears.
Keep in mind I'm a fellow shooting enthusiast, not a financial advisor. :)

Depending on how much cash you need to raise, selling the custom rifle might be the ticket. But, it's highly unlikely you'll recoup more than 2/3 the cost of the setup, and perhaps less than that if you overpaid from the get-go. ;)

I may not be a typical 'gently used' buyer, but what I look for is what would the parts, by themselves, cost. Add in the labor, subtract the used depreciation (e.g. 4k rounds on a .308 bbl in my view means it's 80% done), etc.

Good luck with your dilemma.

Doesn't matter. No one will pay new price for a used rifle when they could just buy a new one. The .308 will allow you to shoot any discipline you can imagine High Power wise, I would keep it.

Watercam, in my books, is absolutely right. There's no way I'd ever choose a .223 over a .308 as the later is much more versatile for the reasons Watercam mentioned. If you are disappointed with how a $5,000 rifle shoots, change bullets and adjust your loads. Just my thoughts.

+1 It just makes sense,
