Question about Ruger rings

Goatsnguns

I recently acquired a early 80's Ruger #1 that had the original medium rings. They were too low for the scope I wanted to mount and I had to buy a new set of 5B's. The new set was not aligned well and it took almost an hour of lapping to get them to 90% contact. I re-installed the original rings and check for alignment and they were much better. My question is this: Has the quality of Ruger rings gone downhill in the last 30 years?

Thanks for any info,

Gary

I had to lap a lot of material off the rings for my #1, which I bought in the late 1990's. I never liked the factory rings and ended up buying set from Warne (which were finicky...). Nice rifle, but I am not sure they are doing anyone a service by milling the ring mounts in the reciever. That rifle was like a boat, happiest day was the day I bought it, followed only by the day I sold it... and I love falling blocks, just not the Ruger...

Dave,

I understand your feelings, this is the first #1 I have owned, haven't shot it yet and already it is a little frustrating. Got it in a trade and was a little surprised how heavy it is. It appears to be unfired and I hope it's a good shooter, but have read allot about accuracy issues in these rifles. By the way it is a 6mm Rem.

Burris makes an adapter base, Ruger to Weaver style rings. Used them on my #1 with the Signature Zee rings. Off-set inserts & no scope ring marks.

Midway Master catalog # 35, page 876, top right, Product# 178-948, $36.49.

Fishiest,

Thanks, I have a set of the adapters and I have a replacement rib on backorder from E.A. Brown. I did manage to get the factory rings lapped & mounted the scope, just haven't had time to shoot. Too much goat milking not enough time at the range.

To answer your question
Rugers quality has gone south over the last 30 years. The only reason I still buy thier handguns is that I like the traditional look that Ruger has with its handguns. All the Ruger rifles that I purchased (3)were sent back for repairs and then sold as soon as they returned.

Well I have a Ruger 77 I bought in the 70s. After I lapped the rings with the scope optically centered I had 9" right windage at 100 so I don't know if this area has ever been that good quality wise.
