Question About Length After Fire Forming for 6 Dasher...

OR know somebody that has one. Matt

^^^^^^^^^^
Even better!!!!

I've got a Dasher and a BRX barrel....and have used both the jam/shoot and the false shoulder method for each.

I found the length to be most consistent with the jam/shoot method.

I also had DJ's Brass hydroform 150 pieces of 6BRX brass for me, and though the other two methods worked fine, there's no doubt in my mind that the hydroform method produced more consistent shoulders and length.

YMMV.

I found by just neck turning and using a 260 bushing then jamming the bullet in the lands and fire forming is easier and does just as good a job, and I have not had one miss fire like some guys have told me they have had.

Joei like what you just said if you have to get someone hydroform you got another 60 cnts in that brass if you have an old barrel dedicate it to fireforming with junk bullets an cases are hit to your chamber

Junk components still have a cost and a value to others. Ad your time, driving time to the range, set up and shoot, many shooters just don't have the time nor want to waste their valuable components nor have an extra fire form barrel.

Fire forming works no doubt. But, one can also over load and blow primers and ruin a case or more. Also under load and not have a good case and must fire again. Thus there is more opportunity to have a less than acceptable case for record round. Your fired case is also indicative of how the chamber was cut and how smooth the chamber walls are for gripping and expansion.

Proper hydro-forming will provide a consistent case that I and many top shooters have witnessed to shoot less than 5" group at 1000 yard IBS match.

Remember, that is why we make chocolate and vanilla ice cream, it is all good just one or more is better for our own personal taste.

I am going to throw a wrench into the thread. I've shot many rounds at 1000 yard targets but until September never at an IBS paper target at that distance. yes, my first time shooting 1000 yard BR was at the Nationals. I didn't have enough brass so I needed to form some. I had some gold box stuff that was twice fired as 6BR. It was very good brass so it was decided that I form it. I have a fire-form barrel and decided to use the false shoulder method. If you cringe at how I did the forming you'll shake your head at the result.
Annealed
Ran a 264 mandrel thru the necks.
set up a Redding Competition seating die (6BR) to size the neck back down to where the bolt closed with difficulty.
Neck turned down onto that false shoulder (just a clean up).
Loaded with some "junk" bullets and powder (can't even remember now what).
Fired in the fire form barrel.
Brass looked good but came in at 1.537 (+/-.004).
Loaded with Alliant MR2000 and Berger Hybrids.
Got to the range in time to get zero on Thursday before the hurricane set in.
Finished 4th LG Group and 5th LG Overall. Best ever 1.864" group in relay two.
My take on false shoulder is that it allows the brass to form with less stretch at the case head. Maybe not perfect but good enough to get beat by Tom. BTW Tom, I can't believe you would think blue box is better.......LOL.
This discussion makes me think I should try Hydro-forming and I have a bit more gold box (unfired) so think it will head on over to DJ soon.

I hate to say you are right an wrong I have fireformed the load an shoot for several thousand rounds an lost less than 3 rounds per box an I don't claim to be the top shooter or guru in this country but I win my fair share if people want to pay you to hydroform more power to them would like to see lapua brass an these discussions would all be a moot point.

That was an attempt at humor, although I have beat my old personal bests with the stuff. I would like to believe it's because I'm getting smarter.... but I kind of doubt that one too!

George, if you're getting consistent lengths you should be fine. I'm a fan of the hydro brass, but of course I haven't had to make any myself! For the record, even though I don't think it's necessary, I like to still hit them mildly one time. I like to shoot 32.0 of rl 15 and a 105 vld just in the lands. So I haven't gone that route to save time is all I'm saying. BTW, that load shoots pretty darn good the handful of times I've removed the lens covers and aimed!

Tom
Rl15 what are doing saving your 4895 for your good stuff lol.
