I've read a lot about hbn coating and barrel prep and assumed most was in reference to stainless match grade barrels.
I've a factory Rem 700 LTR IN 308 Win which is a pretty good shooter. Problem is that I've never got the ES much under 40fps and I've tried it all. As you know the bullet has to make the jump and long bullets are out due to the 12 twist rate. It loves 168 MK, 168 Amax but I'm cursed with high ES.
I never tried moly due to the possible corrosion problem but I thought I'd try HBN to see if it might help with ES. Problem is, what do I do between shooting sessions in reference to barrel protection to prevent rust? If I use oil will I have to remove it and prep the barrel again over a dirty barrel or do a complete bore cleaning after every time I shoot? Could I mix HBN with oil and swab the barrel after use, then patch out prior to shooting and would this remove the HBN?
Any thoughts, suggestions (minus replacing the barrel) would be appreciated?
