Question about HBN prep in chrome moly barrel

I've read a lot about hbn coating and barrel prep and assumed most was in reference to stainless match grade barrels.

I've a factory Rem 700 LTR IN 308 Win which is a pretty good shooter. Problem is that I've never got the ES much under 40fps and I've tried it all. As you know the bullet has to make the jump and long bullets are out due to the 12 twist rate. It loves 168 MK, 168 Amax but I'm cursed with high ES.

I never tried moly due to the possible corrosion problem but I thought I'd try HBN to see if it might help with ES. Problem is, what do I do between shooting sessions in reference to barrel protection to prevent rust? If I use oil will I have to remove it and prep the barrel again over a dirty barrel or do a complete bore cleaning after every time I shoot? Could I mix HBN with oil and swab the barrel after use, then patch out prior to shooting and would this remove the HBN?

Any thoughts, suggestions (minus replacing the barrel) would be appreciated?

Just clean normally, with a patch of light oil as last step. Prior to shooting a HBN coated bullet, just run a dry patch down the bore followed by a patch wetted with HBN suspended in alcohol. I put about 1/8 tsp of HBN in a 6oz. squirt bottle full of 95% Isopropyl alcohol (shake before use as the HBN is not dissolved but suspended). The barrel I shoot HBN coated bullets in does clean up faster than the previous barrel that shot non-coated projectiles. Neither barrel lost accuracy by the time I cleaned them (at about 80-90 shots) so I cannot attest if I could go longer between cleanings. It did not make an appreciable difference in ES in my loads.

Thanks, I didn't know if oiling and then dry patching would remove the HBN or not. Apparently it does remove some due to your recommendation of prepping the barrel again prior to shooting again.

One other question, do you think it would be better to send a patch or two with alcohol to remove the oil before prepping with HBN?

Thanks again.

I find a dry patch or two followed by a patch with the HBN/alcohol works as I have found my first cold bore shot is less than 1/4 inch at 100yds from the next couple of shots and sometimes better than that so I am happy. Without the HBN and just a very light Kroil layer in the barrel the first shot was usually about 1/2 inch or more off.
