Any current HBN or moly users in long range?

The talk of moly seemed to die back when HBN came in and now HBN has gone quiet as well. Are people still using HBN or moly for long range target work? How has HBN affected ES/sd or consistency? How much further do you go without cleaning? How long does the barrel take to settle in after cleaning?

I hBN coat 105 AMax bullets. ES is consistently in the very low teens with 4000-MR, but I've never shot naked bullets to make a comparison. I need to clean every 50 rounds to keep carbon build-up at bay, so I don't think bullet coatings would make much difference one way or the other. The barrel settles in very quickly after cleaning.

maxpower,
I have been using moly in my 6brx and in my 6-284 for 1000 yard work, my gun smith uses it for all his rifles, since I started using it my rifles seem to copper foul less, I clean them at the end of each day of shooting usually but have went both days with mixed results on paper so I have mixed feelings on it, I do not try to remove all the moly from the barrel or it does take to long to settle the rifle back down. I have seen a increased amount of barrel life using it, these are just my finding and are probably more of a opinion then fact as I have only been using it for a couple of years, its easy to do and cheap so it's no issue for me but I don't see many using it on the 1000 yard line, maybe 1 out of 10 guy's maybe, I have thought about about chambering two exact rifles and do a comparison for the life of the barrels but that probably wouldn't be conclusive as every rifle is different even if they are close to exact so I guess it just boils down to trying it and compile your own opinion :)

I have been using hBN for a couple years after switching from moly. I shoot 600 and 1000 yd with excellant results as to barrel carbon and copper build-up.

I use hBN for across-the-course shooting in two, different 6mm spacegun cartridges. Also my 6XC for long range out to 1,200 yards. Been using it for four seasons now after abandoning moly. Clean up seems faster, not seen any need to settle in on the LR rifle (clean bore 1st round's most often half-minute high, 2nd rounds right on but powder choice can affect this too), don't usually see copper after first 100 rounds in a new barrel anyway....

I,m working up a new F/TR rifle and I think the barrel is a slow one compared to others out there in the team shoots. Was thinking of running HBN to get the speed up to where theirs is.
Any ideas as to how much more velocity you can get with HBN by bumping the charge up to get the same pressure?

That's gonna take some testing. My initial chrono results testing moly against hBN showed little if any discernable change. Further tests between coated and plain indicated the same thing.

I admit in all but my 6XC LR rifle (new in late '08) to have been testing with barrels previously shot with moly'd bullets so results likely were skewed.

When in doubt: test, maybe test again!

I shoot moly with my .308 and .223. makes life a lot simpler cleaning wise and makes my loads more consistant. I shot HBN for awhile but got tired of the process.

I've shot moly on everything since 1996. The simple reason is that it keeps fouling down during a match and that keeps the X count high and the shots closer to call. Now that I'm shooting F-Class, I really appreciate having the shots right on call. Last weekend, at 500 yards I shot 200-15, 199-18, 200-18 for a 599-51X on the F-Class target - I still like moly!

Here's a short piece on my coating method: http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/2009/09/moly-coating-salazar.html

Cleaning is normal, i.e. clean after every match or practice session. I use Shooter's Choice and IOSSO paste on a tight jag from Bore Rider http://www.boreriderbarrelcareproducts.com/, no brushes - ever. I borescope and make sure the barrel looks clean and bright each time.

THe first shot is usually 1/2 moa to 2 moa low, the second shot is right in the group.

HbN does everything better than moly with none of its negatives, but I hate coating bullets myself, so I stopped using it, if Sierra Hornady Lapua sold HbN coated pills I would shoot them, I am considering a 6mm barrel because Tubb 115s are priced right and can be had coated.

Just got back from a cronograph session with a pile of HBN coated projectiles in my 308. I swabbed the bore with alchohol/HBN mix before shooting and it did not take too many shots before velocities stabilized. I checked the bore with a borescope after a few shots and there was no copper so I continued testing.
I ended up using 1gn more powder to get the same velocity, but the primers dont look as cratered now, so I suppose it has reduced pressure.
Now I have it in the bore, I dont want to clean the HBN out. Are there any solvents which definitley dont remove HBN but will remove carbon/powder/copper fouling?

I can't remember the exact numbers, but an old Lyman reloading manual I have states that using moly coated bullets will reduce velocity by 3% while reducing pressure by 5% - or something like that. So it stands to reason that if you adjust the charge on a coated bullet to match the velocity of a naked bullet, the pressure will be less. And QuickLoad backs this up.

It sure would be great if there was a solvent that would remove copper and carbon fouling while leaving the hBN behind. But that sounds too much like having your cake and eating it too. :(
