Question about benchrest rules

Our local club has wooden wobbly benches to shoot from that we assemble for bench competitions. Is it legal to shoot from the prone position similar to f-open?

well since it is a CLUB match, what does the match director say.
first clue would be" you are no longer bench shooting, so no"
how about, bring your own bench

Never hurts to ask the match director, I bet they will be ok with you shooting prone in a just for fun club benchrest match but probably wouldn’t be ok if you wanted to shoot from a bench in a prone match. Good luck.

The match director said it was fine and other people have done it at this range. I was just curious as to the actual rules if I went to a more serious competition. If there was a place with concrete benches I have no problem shooting from a bench but with these wooden ones you can see your sight picture swimming around on target with the wind on the bench

At any serious level competition wobbly benches should be unacceptable period.

If i was at a br match i would encourage all of my fellow competitors to shoot prone, sling, kneeling, standing getting a rest on a post, or whatever position they want besides a bench. If the bench is wobbly try to load the legs by pushing on it or shoot more free recoil

Having built a number of concrete benches, I suggest you organize a group to build some. How many of the wobbly benches are there to be replaced? I belong to a range that has the same problem. (The other one that I belong to has immobile benches.) When I shoot there I take my own bench, a four leg (with one that is adjustable) 107# custom built number that allows me to shoot to benchrest standards as long as I bag squeeze instead of twiddling with knobs.

There's a club close to me that has that type of bench- always moving etc. it is a royal pain in the a..s I don't complain I just deal with it as everyone has the same wobbly bench.
The fellas say hey we haven't seen you lately 'again I just keep it to myself because nobody wants to hear excuses.
I feel your pain!

PA 1000 Yard Club, has all new benches but our rules say you can shoot prone if you want.
But I think I'll stick to the benches don't think I could get back up after being down there for ten to fifteen minutes.

I know the feeling, if went prone they would call 911..... jim

Jim God bless the young and the guys that are still in shape!

FalFan2017 The only way to get good benches is to get volunteers and help build them!

How do clubs deal with the fact that permanent concrete benches sometimes aren't practical? Our club has old crappy very heavy wooden benches that were probably very stable when they were made, but now they're all warped and, frankly, worthless. Only casual shooters use them. But our 600 yard line has to work with High Power and Silhouette shooters and benches must be moved. It's a pretty active club, but there is no benchrest to be seen - possibly because there are no good benches.

This is what happens at our club too. We have some concrete benches but not in the competition long range area because we need to use the space for f class and other competitions as well.

I shoot prone at matches that are mostly score bench and I end up partially underneath the permanent concrete benches.
I feel sort of like I'm in a WWII pillbox.

Benches can be double spaced to leave room for prone guys and provide a table for the silhouette guys. Half the benches are better than none
