question 6br to 6x47lapua

Have a quick question for someone in the know.

I would like to have my rifle rechambered from a 6br to a 6x47lapua, can this be done by simply running a 6x47 reamer in or will it need to be set back. Basically I can't find a measurement of a 6x47 body diameter in comparison to a 6br at the shoulder.

Thanks for the help.

sevenmm,

I know the 6BR is bigger at the shoulder than 243AI and 6mmAI. I think it is bigger than the 6 X47L. I would do a 6BRX or Dasher. They will give you the velocity you want. And far better in accuracy.

Thanks for the reply Mark. The reason I was going to go with the 47 was I've been getting into tactical shooting and need a system that will feed 100% of the time. Hoping not to have to lop any barrel off in an attempt to salvage velocity.

I have a copy of a print from PTG for the 6-47L that a friend sent me. Looks like 1/2" setback may do it.

shoulder is .4578"
web is .470".
boltface to shoulder is 1.400"
shoulder is 30*
body taper .097" per inch

I can forward email entire diagram if you want.

Dave,

Thanks for the input, if you have time I would love to see the print, if you get a chance send it to the email in my profile.

Thanks again,

Matt

im not smart enough to do it that way ???, youll have to PM me your address and ill forward it to ya.

I have taken the reamer prints and drawn them in AutoCad and placed them one on top of the other. From the PTG drawings, I find that the case walls are virtually the same all the way up to the body and shoulder junction of the 6BR on the 6x47L, 6mmSuper LR, and 6XC . In fact the 6BR may be inside the walls of those cartridges just a tad (.00005 or way too small to measure). I would assume that the 6x47L reamer will follow the 6BR chamber until it starts to lengthen the body to the necessary longer dimension. A good gunsmith may debate this answer, but I would think it would leave no indication of the previous BR chamber unless the initial chamber had been distorted through polishing or chatter and of course, the reamer conforms with the PTG drawing I was using.

I agree Mark. I would go BRX or Dasher. They feed great and are not finicky like most 6x47's I've had and have seen.

Have done this without a set back. Worst caliber I ever worked with. As previously posted, it was "finicky".:(

I have 6x47l, love it. Smithed by John Beanland. I was going to go 6xc because I had heard lots of negative on the 6x47l. Jon said he hadn't had that experience. Most accurate rifle I own. I have a Dasher and a 6br, I Enjoy them too, especially the Dasher. I'm not saying others haven't had bad experiences, just telling you mine.
