Quarantine activity: Stock-making!

So given the current shut-in, and to have a test run before I start carving my new rifle's stock from the laminate blank I bought (http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/6-5x47-hv-gun.3998349/page-2#post-37726893), I decided to laminate together some redwood boards and carve up a stock:

Particularly, I'm testing these design elements out with this stock:
  • a much lower rise than my other stocks. This one only measured 5.25" from toe to bore axis.
  • a 1" shorter length of pull
  • a forearm that is 2" longer
  • a relief channel cut in the bottom of the forearm
  • a tighter fit into my front rest saddle. This forearm is 3.30" wide for a snug fit.
  • no slope to the forearm or butt so it'll track level in the bags
I'll probably inlet and bed my 20 Vartarg into this stock (Rimrock BR action).

I want to try and dye this stock a color too, probably blue. Any recommendations on what to use to dye the wood would be very appreciated!

I used food coloring in one I made. It was made from poplar kinda had a green tint to it so i used green food coloring came out really nice. I've had a lot of offers on it. I dont know if the blue would overide the woodtone though . My local lumber has some maple that is as white as it can be . I was going to try a blue one with that.

Also, take a look at some of the guitar making videos on YouTube. This is a niche craft that may be the best at dyes with wood. They do some incredible work using dyes to make figured woods POP and layering/fading in different colors.

I love the epoxy filled walnuts. Just like a river. One day, I will convince myself to drop the coin on a beautiful piece of hardwood but for now I keep circling back to the stability and predictability of laminates for a benchrest stock. Not to mention cost. 120 bucks gets you a colorful and cheerful blank.

I love the laminate stocks also.
I'm with you on the stability.
@1shot this is for you Lloyd20190904_144115.jpg I still use the simtech clear primer, then switch to automotive finish with candy base coats and clear.

I'll be anxiously awaiting to see your stock finished.
As I said before, more than happy to lend refinish advice if you need it.

I almost passed out looking at the quilted maple stock, God that thing is out of this world. Excellent work. I love that Vw bus with 6000 windows in them. I rode in one when it was fairly new and it was a greenhouse effect, but I still thought it was cool. I am a Ford guy but really a car guy and I dig it. I noticed how your wife color coordinated with each stock, very well done.

I really appreciate that. I may grab this aniline Keda Dye to try: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BAKWTMQ/?tag=accuratescom-20 since the cost is low and my use needs are small. buying a whole bottle for 25 bucks seems a bit excessive.

I normally thin out minwax polyurethane and rub it on in very thin coats, sanding between. It looks like this will be a no-go with dye as I'll pull the dye into the poly and make it cloudy. What do you think of buying a can of the aerosol poly to lay down the first couple coats?

I guess this could be the time when I bite the bullet and buy a spray gun. I don't know much about them though.

If you decide to get a spray gun, definitely Simtech.
Otherwise I'd use Spraymax 2k aerosol after the dye. Spray a 4-5 coats sand and repeat, until pores are filled.
I understand about the costs of dye, I got 7 different colors. Lol
When you get ready for dye and know what color you want to go hit me up.
I've shipped dye and candy to a few guys to use on thier projects.

This is 1 I have just finish laminated ply with sheoak side for a howa short action 8 coats of 2 pac clear to finish it off
