Q re press disassembly

this is part of arm of older Herters press, #3. broke off. How do I remove the pin on this arm? I have another arm a fellow member was nice enough to dig out of his garage! I tapped it pretty good with a punch but no movement? any ideas?

It means that if you hit it with a punch it will come out i.e. friction fit pin

You can buy new hardened pins from Fastenal for about 10 cents a piece instead of 5-10 dollars from hornady.

May also try hiting it from other side incase it's a tapered pin

I have given it pretty good whacks from both side with a steel punch and no movement. the parts diagram form 50 years ago shows it to be inserted L to R. so I have tried the reverse and vice versa. actually on closer review, the diagram does not show L to R, or R to left. it just says it is a link pin.

different year, but very close to the design. #9 is the culprit. this bugger is very well made. heavy as a boat anchor.

You need to support it well and then use a hydraulic press to push the pin out. An Arbor press may also work.

Another option if no press, use a C clamp, 1/2" socket that will fit over the pin and a bolt smaller than the pin. Trap all three and tighten the C clamp against the bolt.
Edit: check for a set screw in #10, the link bar.

Pull the ram out from the bottom, It will make it easier to deal with.

A sturdy bench vise might do the trick.a socket one side and drift slightly smaller in diameter of your pin the other.wind away.if not a hydraulic press.

ps, what is a press fit?

A press fit is better described as an interference fit, as in, the pin is larger than the hole by some small amount.
Support it well on a solid surface and get/make yourself a very stubby punch to get it started.
Look it over extra careful for retainers of any kind before you get rammy.
