PRS 22rimfire

I need some advise for a new shooting adventure. I want a factory rifle that can be modified and built on to shoot 50 to 400 yds in a local PRS type match. Need to be accurate enough to shoot the KYL 50 yd. targets and capable of, with the right condition, hitting a 18 x24 steel plate at 400 yds. Before everyone starts talking custom builds and questions what ammo, I am very aware of all the avenues there are and that ammo is a commodity that has to be sought after like a rare diamond. Been there and done that in the Benchrest world. That's another discussion for another day. I think it is ridiculous that you can't expect for 15.00-17.00 dollar ammo want shoot in a bucket consistently. How much MOA rail/rings, scope capable to send a .22 lr to 400 yds. Its my opinion that the 400 yd target is not possible on just any day. My budget for a rifle is 500.00. Scope 400.00. No top shelf ammos, Eley, Lapua or RWS. I know this is a subjective venture. If it cant be done then I can get it. Not something Iv'e just got to do. CZ's, Rugers, etc. I'm just interested in REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES.

Over on Long Range Only they were discussing a competition in Vegas that went out to 550 yards with 22LR rimfire ammo. Jeff Broz was shooting a Vudoo V22.
The Vudoo is out of my budget, I have a Ruger Precision Rimfire on order and a Viper Vortex HS-T 6-24x50 waiting to be mounted.

Here is the link to Vudoo:

Yeah, the voodoo is out of my budget also. At least until if I know for sure this is something I really want to do.

Ruger precision will do the trick IF you get a good one...about 50% are great, the rest end up needing tweaked but are serviceable. You may also consider finding a CZ 455 on a deal (discontinued for the CZ 457). They're very good rifles with lots of upgrade options.

The Ruger as I understand it is hit or miss. Literally speaking. What tweaking would one have to do if its not dependable?

You asking for a lot, but not budgeting much money for it. You want to have accuracy from 50-400y with budget gun and cheap ammo? So does everyone else. If it was cheap and easy, everyone would be doing it. I shoot matches like this. We have people with savages, ruger, 10/22, vudoo, anschutz, fortner, etc, etc. The best shooters always get the best results; but most have very competitive rifles with good ammo, and practice a lot. For long range targets you need match subsonic ammo, maybe not Tenex, but something good. The ES of cheap ammo will make it sketchy at distances past 200y. Wind at these distances with a 22lr is outrageous! You need reliable, accurate, magazine fed guns for these matches.

I would get something within your budget and go have fun. Check your expectations at the door. Fun is the goal.

Yes, I agree. Like I said in my original post, I want REAL life experience. I've been down the money pit direction and ammo chase that Bench Rest (ARA) requires. Not interested in that anymore. The level of competition at the range I would be shooting is not as serious as warranting 3000.00 + 2000 scope and 1700.00/case of ammo and another few hundred dollars of testing ammo. I just want something that I'm confident with to have some low stress fun.

Get something modest. RPR22, CZ, Tikka whatever and give it a try. You might not like it all, and then your not out much. However... If you get hooked :) you will spend whatever you want.

I ended up with a nice Annie 64 Trainer. I new I was only shooting these matches once a month and they weren't my primary discipline. 22 matches were purely for fun and I wasn't gonna go hog wild. I figured the Annie 64 wouldn't hold me back and wouldn't cost $3-$4k.

The scope however is super important in this game. If you cant see it, you can't hit it. And if your scope doesn't track

Ron,
I have a CZ455 Varmint with a SWFA SS 20X. Also I have a Tikka T1X. It has a Nightforce 8X32 from my centerfire for now ( looking for a scope now Maybe another SS 20X) The SS scopes are $300 with 110 moa of adjustment. Both guns are in your price range, the SS would be less. Both for these guns like SK Std+, SK Rifle, Wolf match target, and Match Extra. Both gun will shoot 0.5 moa out to 150 yds with this ammo.

That's REAL life information. Thanks Papa Charlie. I have an extra 16x42 SS I'm not using. With the 30 MOA rail do you think it will get out to 400 yds? It has 110 MOA in it as well.

I've been looking at the Tikka as a possibility. How does it compare to the 455 in REAL life. I had a 455 Varmint and it was unpredictable. Had a Fly trigger in it too. I bedded it. Did everything except change the barrel. Ammo picky it was. Sold it and moved on.

I don't know the answer to your question. Looking at the bases used on the optics listed it might.
What I do know is that the reticle is most stable when as close to the center (equal elevation adjustment up and down and same for windage) as compared to being to the extreme of any adjustment.
If you find that you require more, you can always replace the rings with Burris Xtreme Signature rings. The Burris Signatures can be adjusted from 0-40 MOA. Add that on top of a 30 MOA base and you should be able to placed the scope in optimum position for your rifle and barrel.

My Tikka will out shoot the CZ, Great trigger too.

I Had a Ruger Precision and a CZ 455 ,that would not do what you want to establish .They were both OK at 50 yds ,beyond that not so much ... Maybe I got two lemons ? I tried ammo, trigger, bedding, torque , etc. . Distance with 22lr will let you know exactly how good you and your gun/ammo are . For budget ammo I had the best luck with CCI SVs...Eley,RWS,SK, and Norma shot a little better but not worth the money . Like I said, just two rifles so a small example...that being said I have a I have an ugly little Savage 93 with a plastic gator skin camo stock that out shot both of them ...maybe just the luck of the draw ?

I have a CZ 455 with a Lilja barrel, and a Ruger 10/22 with a Kidd Ultralight barrel. You can start with either of these base rifles and plan to upgrade the barrel and have a real shooter on your hands. Both have worked well for me, with numerous match wins. There are other solid choices that I don't have experience with, like Tikka T1x or Ruger Precision Rimfire or Ruger American Target, but I can say a CZ (457 now, which should be decidedly better) is a solid bet with the option to upgrade the barrel pretty easily, and a 10/22 with an easily upgraded barrel can also be a shooter and is easier for strong/weak shoulder stages and "spinner" stages. For your scope budget, I'd look at the Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24 FFP or an SWFA 12x42. If you can raise your budget a bit to have a better experience at the longer distances, The Athlon Midas TAC is worth a look.

I understand how frustrating it is to pay for expensive 22LR ammo. In my rifles, it makes a huge difference, but it might not with yours. I'd suggest to shoot lead bullet ammo only, never shoot copper jacketed, and be careful of what type of lube (if any) is on the ammo. The beeswax stuff seems to jam things up in the cold. Whatever you ammo budget and choice ends up, I'll also suggest that 22LR ammo is usually priced and graded by consistency, sometimes even offering the same bullet and case and lube material but differing in primer and powder and manufacturing tolerances. In our club, Wolf Match Target / SK Standard Plus is a common choice and Wolf Match Extra / SK Rifle Match is usually chosen by those with better scores. All of those are actually Lapua but at a lower cost than Center-X. Some do decently well with CCI Standard, but it tends to suffer consistency at distance. You might look at CCI Green Tag or CCI Select, but I have no experience with them. I'll be trying some SK Long Range Match soon, and this summer I'll be comparing Midas+ and Eley Match to see if either one is worth the upgrade in my rifle, but if I don't make the championship this year I may not bother.

I hope that's helpful. Have fun!
