Prometheus II

Spoke with Brand just a few minutes ago. Base price 3100.00, the lease he says is to keep the scale from being use in a commercial context. He also advise that he has heard through the grape vine that the GD503 scale is already being phased out. Even with this, i am still interested in this scale. From all reportss from users that i have read or personally heard, have been nothing short of positive on this scale.

I don't think every one should worry about the GD503 being "phased out". That just means they are upgrading and putting out new models.

I spoke with Sartorius today to find out what model will be replacing it. They have a new line called Practum. The TECHs I talked too recommended the Sartorius P124-1S if I did not need a NTEP balance, which I don't.

The new line has a touch screen and easier menus. Of course it's also more expensive.

Looks like I might have to sell my 3 month old GD503 and buy the newest and coolest model?!

JUst Checking My records..I emailed him and spoke with him Oct 4 2010 when the price was 2900$ purchase
He had me measure hundreds of kernals of powder for length and I made a spread sheet of average sizes(what torture)
he said he wouldn't forget me, and would contact me when a new unit was available, but he never did....
:)

In the most humble way, I would like to say to those out there who might have slipped through the cracks a while go with Brand, why don't you just call him?

He was working a 70 hour work week on call for many years and just recently started building the Prometheus gen 2 full time.

In all my dealings and many questions to the man he has ALWAYS called me back and has been a true gentleman true to his word!

One man, one garage, one heck of a machine!

Don't be upset, give him a call!

I 2nd everything just said. He is a real gentleman and an unbelievable craftsman. He has answered or returned every call I have made and there have been a few. He is dedicating all of his time to this machine. It takes him over 80 man hours to build this machine. Once you see it you will wonder how? He is an engineering genius! I am proud to call him a new found friend. JVON

I have been lusting for a Prometheus II for some time. I even got on the waiting list. Yes, it is very expensive at close to 3K. Brand gave me a call when my name came up on the list. I could have dropped the coin (at the time), but is is hard to tell the little lady "I just spent most 3K on that Prometheus I have been talking about -- don't worry my love, I don't own it -- it is only a lease." That dog won't hunt in my house. Additionally, you can't use it for any commercial purposes -- no team loading, no business enterprise, just personal use. You can't leave it to your kids or bequeath it to your best friend in your Last Will and Testament. You don't own it and you are restricted in its use.

Let there be no mistake about it, the Prometheus has no equal in performance. However, only a time share can equal the bad business decision to lease this precision instrument. I still lust, but I will repent and sin no more :)

Like I said before, the owner himself kept me from owning, sorry, leasing one. This happened many loaded rounds ago. However, he did call me a couple days ago and apologized for not keeping his word at the time. I appreciate his phone call and by that I can tell he is a man of his word, otherwise he would not have bothered calling me. No doubt he has a very good product, but the lease thing is what I was debating with at the time and is what will keep me from ever getting one.

What is the reason for the lease anyway?

I don't believe there is a restriction on team loading as long as it is not for commercial use. As far as your will ,you can do what I did , talk to Brand and he will have se suggestions for you. Believe me , Brand has a very good reason for the lease decision ,but you would need to discuss that personally with Brand. JVON

I have a question for you guys.

Have you or anyone you know done testing to see if this amount of precision in powder dispensing will show on your 1000yd target? I think the correct amount of powder (sweet spot or whatever you want to call it), proper and consistent neck tension, and the many other variables we have to deal with may be more important than powder charges consistent to the single kernel of powder.

Bare in mind I shoot with a sling and irons so I don't have to have the level of accuracy that F class and 1000yd benchresters do.

A friend of mine has a better scale than I do and says that four single kernels of Varget equal 1/10 grain, so a 46.5 gr. charge will have approx. 1860 kernels of powder. If I fire a round with 1861 kernels and the next one has 1862 and the next 1859 will this show on my target? I just can't see how it would. Remember 1 moa X ring.

Am I right in my thinking or do I need to get in line for a Prometheus?

A good friend of mine has had a Gen II for about a year now, and I've thrown a few charges of H4350 with it, just to get a feel for the machine. No question, it's an amazing piece of engineering, at least an order of magnitude better than any of the electronic powder dispensers that I've owned for awhile & then gotten rid of.

I'm not in the market for a Gen II right now, simply because of the cost & other demands on my financial resources. Guess I'll just have to keep on 'getting by' with my old Redding #3, Harrell's Precision meter, & DI MX-123 scale. At least the 123 I have works (knock on wood). But even at the lofty price of the Gen II, I'll go for one if/when I can spare the money. It'd sure beat sitting at the bench for 45+ min to load 50rds of LR rifle ammo.

I don't care if was a lease, people who have one don't care about the lease, all you nay sayers can go on and on about cost, lease, wait time, whatever, IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I worked a lot of OT to pay for mine, I fix airplanes for the only profitable Airline on the Planet, Southwest, so I'm a blue collar guy not a CEO of a billion dollar corp, for me, I work 12 hour days, I spend 2.5hrs a day in the car to and from work, family and chores on my off time come before shooting, the accuracy is nice, to the kernel every 8-10 seonds is the reason I love it.

The key to the Pro II is not the precision...yeah, its there, in spades, but the key is how fast it prepares a perfect charge EVERY time WHILE you are seating the bullet in the case you just charged. When you get done dropping the loaded round into the box, the next powder charge is waiting on you, ready to go. the auto feature is what makes it so awesome. the precision of the scale is just a nice byproduct. Yeah, you can run a charge master, but its not as fast and no where near as accurate. Or you can run a dribbler of some sort and weigh on a good scale to the kernal, but its not automatic, you have to manually do it. With the Gen 2, the only thing you do is drop the charge into the case. Done.

And, the lease isnt really an issue. As stated earlier, its not cool to discuss it hear, but Brand will walk you through it and why its there. But it wasnt an issue for me. What is an issue is my time at the loading bench, which is minimal now. Even my wife is thrilled I got one, even after she learned what it cost, cause I am not living at the bench weighing out charges now.

I know of noone that has gotten one that has regretted it.

Well I got a call from Brand yesterday and mine is headed my way. Should see it Monday or Tuesday. Can't wait to give it a try.

John (Mudcat):

Please talk to my wife. She remembers when I came home with a $7,500 1000 yard heavy gun package I built "so we could shoot together." I got "the look'" despite the fact that it won a 10 match score agg at Hawks Ridge in 2004. We don't lease cars and and the house is almost paid for. Talk of leasing this precision powder dispenser gets me "the look" again. Maybe your performance at Perry last year put you over the hump -- your wife had to listen:)

As for me, I just can't wrap my mind around a lease as I am too old and too consersative. Heck, I would rather throw down the big coin up front and call it a day -- all mine at last! I could beg for forgiveness instead of permission as that has worked for decades.

Help requested,
Jim

Mr. Crowe:

A 200-17X in the prone with irons at 1000 puts you into another league. You can talk accuracy with anyone at any time.
