Project: Blue Rifle

Time for something a little different.

My dad got me interested in rifles when when I was super young. Shooting BR is what he did before I was born (Late 70's). He stopped competing when I was "on the way". I was always excited when he'd pull out his BR guns to clean and give a fresh coat of oil. There was always a new story about Fred Sinclair, one or two of his buddies, or a record, trophy, plaque he won.

I've got targets, plaques, magazine articles of groups and aggs as low as .08.

The sappy part: 4 years ago he was diagnosed with brain cancer. It hit him very quickly, dementia took over him. I asked him one day if I could take the rifles home with me to take care of them. He was a foggy mess but was happy to get them out and help put them in my truck, but he had a moment of clarity and said "I'm giving these to you, but if I ever want them back, I want them back"

He always wanted to retire, build cabinets and shoot benchrest. He knew he'd never see those guns again. He passed a year later.

Sappy part over.

This stock is off to BC'z . In the mean time I plan on polishing the shit out of the barrel and action. Then gluing it back together and putting it into a shadow box on a wall in the shop or reloading room.

That sticker is older than I am. Every piece of equipment he had, had a Mickey Mouse sticker on it. He was the mickey mouse kid.

This is the "blue rifle" - There's also a "red rifle" (hunter class, 30x40 sinclair (effectively 308 AI) - will leave a bruise on your shoulder! - but that's another thread for another time.)

Nothing sappy about that story, you are a very lucky person to have those memories. Good luck with the rifle and thanks for sharing your touching memory of your Dad. I lost mine 10 years ago and today would have been his birthday. Thank God every day for mine.

BTW: Rem XP 100, 6PPC, Jewel trigger. Stock and barrel(s) unknown. The foam in the stock is dry rotted. I guess 50 years will do that.

The action is still slick and clean. I also have a zero round barrel for it. Once it's all back together I'll shoot some targets before it goes on display.

I like your posts about your Dad. Memories have a poignancy when we have custody of something someone used and loved using it. You have your Dad's rifles and in a way, a part of your Dad is with you.

I get it. It's because I also have a part of my Dad with me. One day we came home after shooting and he asked me to take his Model 70 home to clean it. When I said I'd get it back to him in a day or two, he just said "don't hurry. Keep it for a while." He knew, and I knew he'd never shoot it again. Dad's rifle will be with me until I die.

Very cool Aaron, I am hoping BC'z is going to airbrush another Mickey Mouse onto it or have it done, To honor your Dad. Anyway, Please show a pic or 2 of the 30-40 Sinclair and elaborate on what you know about it, I love 30-40 wildcats.

I'll do another thread for that gun. There might be some pictures around here of it... It's the one I've done all the bolt work and truing on. That action saw probably 100k rounds shooting varmints.

The 30-40... Not a lot of info on it. We could never find the sizing die for it. Something was bad wrong with the barrel. It was a 10 twist but would only stabilize 168g bullets... but would almost always blow primers. It wouldn't flatten them, but they'd have a considerable sized hole burned through them? It was very weird.

Sounds like your dad will be smiling at you every time you pull the trigger on his rifles!

Stock is on its way across the country to BC'z. Asked him to make it sparkly and get the color sorta close.

There's a whole box of plaques and old magazines. This stuff was in one of his rifle cases... trying to figure out the significance of these two magazines.

I bet there's a couple of you listed in there.
