Primers falling out

Have 1x fired 300WSM Federal brass and winchester magnum primers. The primers will fall out if you tap the case on the table. Never had this happen.

Is it possible the primers are out of spec? Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? SHould I get a new brand of primers, or toss the brass?
 
How hot was the one firing? If it was a factory load I am stumped as I have combined that brass/primer combo numerous times (as we all have) with no issues. Measure the primer pocket diameter of unfired brass against the 1X and, now, 2X fired cases and see what you have.
 
Try so Norma brass if you are reloading. I don't like Winchester or Federal brass Fire them one time then toss them.

Did you try another brand of primer? I think I read somewhere about some Winchester primers being out of spec. Matt
 
They were factory Federal loads...so they weren't hot. Got a website for what the correct OD on a primer is supposed to be?

Also, we were using Hornady Superformance powder. The load data available had us slightly compressing the powder and it was enough to pop the primers out.

Sir,
If I read that right, you reloaded the factory ammo brass, which would make it 2x fired total?

So then, your reloads were hot enough to blow primers when you fired them?

If that is the case, then those reloads are UNSAFE!


You're either loading TOO MUCH powder, and/or overly sizing the brass. Too much headspace from oversizing will result in popped primers & ruined brass.

Either way, you've got an unsafe situation happening.
For all intents & purposes, that brass is TOAST.
Throw it away!!!

Above & beyond all, STOP what you're doing and figure out what's going on.
There's an explosion happening about 4" from your face, so please take every precaution to identify what's going on, before doing any more loading for that rifle.

Just erring on the side of safety.
If it was fired factory ammo that wouldn't hold a primer, you may have a whole nutha set of issues...

I assume it would not take much to try another brand or batch of primers. If both brands/batch of primers fall out or are loose then throw away the brass and then maybe check head space?

No. He bought a box of Factory Federal ammo, fired it. Now we've sized, primed and the primers are falling out. I've loaded 6 rounds and now i've unloaded them. Gunna wait to see what the spec is on the primers to see if it is a Winchester primer issue, or shitty Federal brass (either issue is hard to believe).

A few simple questions that need answers
Is the gun a custom
Were the bullet exposed to high heat
How much has the base expanded compared to un fired
How much is the depriming pin Coming out of the die
With the questions ask we could help.

I would mic the primers carefully, and if in spec. I would call Federal. Obviously, this should not be happening. They may have a brass hardness issue that they need to look into. Those cases could be just soft enough to cause an issue with normal pressure loads.

Really nice to have a lathe, I machined a device for go/no-go for small rifle. I too had trouble with Federal brass (223 with crimped primers though)...

I'll ask the next needed question. Were these 300WSM primers crimped in for the factory ammo? I've seen a lot of factory federal with crimped primers.

I have seen many prime pockets ruen by improper deperiming pin set up. Larry

I'm still loading cases that were over pressure and still no issue in the primer pockets.
