Primers falling out

Federal & Lake City brass of decades past was....was good reloadable brass-
fast forward to Fed,LC,CCI,Speer,RCBS,Blount Indust merger to ATK

Federal Gold Medal Match Ammo/Brass is.....JUNK
(crimped primers for a reason)
(shoot once & delegate it to the scrap bucket)

ATK is not your/our friend !

When you installed primers back into the brass were they snug going in?

In any event, you'll want to replace the brass regardless if it was caused by hot loads or excessive head space due to over sizing because gas leakage by the primer will start etching your bolt face and you don't want that.

Naturally, the root cause of the problem need to be identified.

HTH,

Have 1x fired 300WSM Federal brass and winchester magnum primers. The primers will fall out if you tap the case on the table. Never had this happen.

Is it possible the primers are out of spec? Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? SHould I get a new brand of primers, or toss the brass?

The UNplated (brass color) WLR & WLRM primers I have fit loose in good, new primer pockets.

It must be because Winchester forgot that the plating they left off adds diameter to any product.

Presently I am using them up however lets see how this shakes out.
HTH,

I would contact Federal. Once fired brass primer pockets should not be oversized. They will most likely want the brass and any unfired rounds from that lot of ammo returned to them for inspection. Could be soft brass, hot factory load, primers out of spec, chamber out of spec. But they will be able to access the issue better than we can from a little info on the forum.

Have sent in ammo to another manufacture that resulted in a recall for over pressure once so never know. If potential problems are not reported how will they know there might be an issue.

Found this:

Primer pocket is a tough bugger to get an accurate measurement, but with my calipers, it's 0.210...same as the winchester primers. According to Federal, 0.210 is the nominal primer diameter. I'm thinking the primer is out of spec.

Emailed Winchester to see what their spec is on the primer.

I have both the large and small. They have become a part of my loading practices. Primer pocket leaks, no matter how small, will cause flyers. Even more so than your double digit SD.

HTH,

+2 or 3 or whatever the count is up to.

Do you have any of this same/original ammo that has NOT been fired? In other words, one where the primer fit fine? Root cause is what you should look for. Compare measurement of original case with a fired case. Primer pockets can only increase diameter in so many ways: Hot load, cleaning method, uniforming tool, sizing tools, oversized chamber, etc. WSM brass is usually pretty tough...I typed usually..... A load hot enough to expand the primer pocket should have dramatically flattened the primer. Primer cup is much softer than the brass case (if case manufactured properly). Did you use any tools to clean, uniform, de-crimp, or in any other way intrude into the primer pocket? If you answer no, you are narrowing the root cause quickly..... Sizing die and improper process in case manufacturing are left....as well as oversized chamber. New gun? Ammo extract from chamber ok? Anything look funky on the bolt head? Marks, dings, rough spots? If the answer is yes, or if you got the gun used, you might use some cerro-safe and make a cast of your chamber for measuring.....

The primer dimension is .2103"to /2120"

One of my mic's read .2100" on a WLR unplated primer the other mic read .2101".

Did they mean for you to have reloadable brass after you fire em or you think they want you to buy components? Ive seen factory loads very hot to get that nice lookin drop chart on the back of the box that everybody studies in the store.

Thanks! Looks like the primers are out of spec. Didn't get a chance to push the Fed primers in this weekend...but soon.

I had the same problem except it didn't make a differents on make of brass. I was going to toss brass but then I measured the primers. my cci mag primers were a little bigger so I tried them in cases I was going to toss and guess what they went real tight. I measured all my different primers and cci were a hair bigger so no more Winchesters for me!

I think that the original application for super glue was for the use of putting primers back in cases.

Federal brass is notorious for developing loose primer pockets within a short amount of firings. Buy some Norma brass and I'm sure you won't have the same problems that you are having, plus they will last a lot longer than any other brand of brass.
