Primer Surprise!

I wanted to see which primers worked best in my 6BRX. I loaded 5 Rd's of each with the same powder charge and bullet only changing primers. Lapua cases, Varget and R-15 powders CCI 450, CCI BR-4 and Remington 7 1/2 primers, Berger 105 VLD's

1 CCI 450's & Varget. 2917fps SD 14 not impressed! I thought this would be the go to load. Group was around 3/4 inch with two flayers at 10 & 11 o'clock. opening it up top 1 - 1 1/4". Was it me? Wind? I don't know but not impressed.

2 450's and R-15. 2910fps SD 6 About the same as above. Still have 2 fliers although the group was a little smaller. Again, not impressed.

3. CCI BR-4 and R-15 WOW!!! Things changed! 2919fps SD 2 All 5 Rd's touching in a nice little round hole. Now I'm impressed!

4 CCI BR-4 Varget 2913fps SD 12 hard to tell the difference between this group and the R-15 group.
I am impressed again.

5. Remington 7 1/2 Varget 2922fps SD 13. The tightest group of all! It's just getting better and better!

So it's back to the range in a day or so and twinking loads 5 and 3. I forgot to load some R-15 and 7 1/2's so I'll give that a try also. Just goes to show every rifle is different. Testing was done at 100 yds. I'll be going back to 300 next time.

Rifle Remington SA in an Eliseo stock
Barrel 1/8 Krieger 30"
Jewel trigger
Knight Force 12 X 42 scope.
I used a Magneto Speed Chrono. Love this thing. No more problems with the light.
Sorry guys, forgot the camera no pics.

My 2 cents ;D

Barnard action , Krieger 1-7.5 Palma taper 32' finish

Lapua Case , Wolf SRM , N-150 30gr. 107 Sierra Moly. .010 off or jump ?

5 shoots at 200 yards cover with a Nickel

SD. 4.3 Vol. 2900 Plus

I would try changing powder charges and seating depths before just giving up on primers.

Differant primers will have differant ignition/burn rates and pressure so it may be with the 450's you are just on a bad node....but with that said if you had over 1moa groups at 100 that is not very good.

In my BRX I look for 5 shot groups under a 1/2'' at 200 yards. That load will give me under 2'' groups at 600 yards in good conditions or when I may be just lucky :)

What were your charge weights for each load?

And I'm not saying that you need to try the 450's again ether!

Guys I agree with you about not counting out the 450's just yet. The load was 32.2grs of both Varget and R-15. Fact is that load don't make it in this rifle. No sign of pressure with any load. The other primers delivered both speed and accuracy with low SD's. Think I'll start at 31 grs with the 450's and work up. At 32.5 GRS of Varget I get a bolt click on opening. Shooting in 90+ degrees with 70% or more humidity in FL is a good reason. Like I said every rifle is different and its fun figuring out what each likes to eat. Maybe later in the year when it cools down?

I agree you should start with the Varget at 31 grains.

I'm shooting Berger 108's with a grain less of your test load with Varget and 450's.....it shoots pretty well at 600.

32.5 grains of Varget and a 108 is very hard on brass in my gun.

I have never shot a 107 SMK so I can not help you with that bullet combo.

Good Luck,

I agree on using 20 shots or more. I don't think 3 shot groups tell you much. 5 shot groups are a good place to start and gives you a base line for further testing. I prefer using the SD number. I've found the lower the number the less vertical dispersion.

I've found this load isnt hard on brass in my rifle. Some cases have been loaded 22 times and still going strong. Primer pockets are still tight and no stretching of the case.

Of course not, you're nowhere near the pressure maximums. 32.5gr of 15 is a slow load in a BRX/Dasher.
Most prefer to run at the 2,980fps node or the one just above - those both require more powder than you've tested. But both are proven to be winners at 600 and 1K.

Stick with CCI450s and step on the gas.... 8)

I shoot a 6BRX and I use 450 mag, I also did a primer comparison, I use 33.6 gr of Varget, get one hole at 100 yds, have not tried 200 yds, I guess I should though.

You guys might be on to something! Maybe I'm not pushing things hard enough. I thought I was going a little hot, maybe not. I'm shooting molly bullets so I guess I can step up the load and try again

I once did an extened test on primers. I tried several different loads indifferent cal`s. What I found was that they act differently with different powders and different bullet weights. I found 1 combo that with 5 different primers, some were standard some were mag, and the sd of all shot fired was 15. In all of the testing I did I did have 11 combo that showed presure signs with 1 primer and it was a std., not a mag. primer. I came to the conclusion that you can never predict how a powder primer combo will work untill you work up a load with it. Some load like 1 primer and shoot well with nothing else. Other loads will shoot very well with any primer. :-\

[/quote] The above load being slow should not be written in concrete. Most days with my current batch of 15 my max is 32.5 running at 2970. I was shooting 33 last fall with no problems with pretty much the same conditions as this spring. Later! Frank

I don't know why my brx is different but much more than 32.6 varget or re-15 I run into big pressure signs. I use the wolf srm primers and am getting around 3060 on the chrono. I cant remember the sd.

I'm glad to hear someone else is like mine. My load with Varget was 32.1 and I was running 3045. And with 8208 at 32.5 gr I'm at 3100.
