Primer seating depth and primer seating force

Seems to me the 21st Century, Frankford Arsenal, Darrel Hollands add on for the RCBS bench primer, and the K&M unit will all allow for precise seating depths. Frankford Arsenal being the for budget minded

I can only speak for Holland's perfect primer add on for the RCBS which is not exactly cheap @ $170 plus the cost of the RCBS unit or $320 complete but I can dial in seating depth to .0005 if I want to. I don't bother and just seat everything to .003 below flush, honestly never tried any other setting. Maybe I should but .003 seems to work well. It is also easy on my hands, 50 years of weight lifting and twisting wrenches took a toll. I have been using it for about three years now and would never go back to a hand unit

I don't mean to bag on anybody's ideas - but watching that video was like watching someone claim they invented water. One can get a better feel for when a primer has bottomed when one has a longer arm as the one in the video has - which is the whole reason for better feel as he explains. The problem is pre-load. That machine does NOTHING to eliminate the additional pre-load on those primers which took extra force to get to the point of having been seated. Only when the pockets are trued or levelled can the primers incur the same relative friction and depth of travel. As anyone who knows how to properly ream pockets knows - any quality seater (such as a Sinclaire or other quality seater) will then enable one to KNOW just when the primer has seated - and can control any amount of "crush" desired pretty accurately. Same goes for anyone who wants to use a seater that stops at a certain depth. That would work only with leveled pockets AND primers all the same height. So, this is where I offer a $1,200 tool to measure your primer height. I don't have one - but for those willing to spend $1,200, I'll see what I can come up with.....

If "feel" is important in primer seating, and not just placing the primer flush with the bottom of the primer pocket, then wouldn’t it make sense to measure the primer seating force?

If one would fabricate a “holder” similar to a case gage, then use a normal shell holder, drop the case to be primed with the shell holder in that “holder”, one could use a modified AMP press ram with an adjustable priming rod (with different lengths or otherwise adjustable), and use the AMP press to measure those seating forces.

Would that be feasible?

Thank You,
Tiago
"Feel" IS just placing the bottom of the primer in contact with the bottom of the primer pocket.

watch Primer seating/crush testing
I have seen similar results.
This is not as simple and obvious as some members on AS would have you think.
It does need to be tested, and likely needs tested with each load. As stated a zillion times before, at distance, you can see stuff that are tougher to see at 100 yards, unless of course, you are "that good". Which at 100, I am not.

What topic isn't? Tumbling wet/dry and choice of media is usually good for 5 pages every couple of months.
Nobody says “corncob media sucks and if you use it you’re stupid”!! That’s the difference I was pointing out. It doesn’t bother me it’s just interesting. If you’re not interested in testing primer seating or think a tool is too expensive, some go all cancel culture. Just an observation ;)

I don't think many here would consider the Frankford Arsenal priming tool expensive. Even the K&M can be had for $149. There are plenty of options out there for precision primer seating, just my observation

Bright Idea: Wouldn't it be fun if someone called up all of the current long range benchrest record holders and asked them how they seated the primers for their record breaking match? Then you could contact all of the most recent nationals winners.
thing is the most important thing all those record holders have is something you cannot get with a credit card. My neighbor buys whatever golf equipment the current PGA pros are using, poor fellow has never broke 100 and never will. But if he ever wants to open a used golf equipment store his garage could stock one. No exaggeration, I would bet he has at least 25 putters if not more

Folks are testing it, and to them, seeing a difference.
Maybe it’s like Scotch, some like highlands and some like the mossy lowland flavor. To each their own.
Happy testing

How about a Macallan 18?
