Primer Seating Depth & Accuracy?

Probably no help,but for interest sake a change to large rifle primer and brass should show if there are ignition problems.

It can for sure cause ignition issues. I've seated primers too deep on purpose to test the difference. ES went way upto around the 30s in a 6 grendel. Correct seating depth came back to ES in low teens or better.

What was “correct seating depth?” K and M says .002 for small rifle primers, .003 for large rifle primers. What are you suggesting is optimum? I also have issues with rim distortion or lack of uniformity that causes most measuring devices that register off the rim problematic for consistency as the base for the measurement varies and consequently is not necessarily where the primer is in relation to the bottom of the pocket, more where it is in relation to the cartridge rim.

Did you try switching to decaf coffee? Your biorhythms could be out of sync.

As you can see below you have to find the peak biorhythm node.

That's actually been my habit to borescope every cleaning, but admittedly I'd been slacking on it with this barrel. That said, since my troubles began I'd been scoping every time I cleaned it.

Cleaning the snot out of the barrel was my first step after the TX state match. I hit it with CLR, bronze brush, then Eleminator, bronze brush (repeat multiple times over). After I had it as clean as I could get it with those products, I hit it with two patches of IOSSO (focusing on the throat, then taking longer strokes). The thing was looking brand new aside from the mild fire-cracking you'd expect.

If anything, I was worried I'd cleaned the barrel too much.

That was before this past Saturday's testing, which included re-running an OCW of N150 (the powder it had been running), and Varget to see if I could get them to shoot.

I just finished doing a mild cleaning and don't really see any areas of concern. There's no carbon ring, and no hard-carbon in the first ~6-8 inches of the barrel. The steel has a darker tint in that area of the barrel, but I am 100% confident if I ran some JB or IOSSO in there it'd shine up like the muzzle end. I pulled slightly more copper out than I ever have before, but I may have over IOSSOed the damn thing Friday night as part of the 'troubleshooting'.

I'm probably done messing with it. I still have 2,200 of the same lot 200.20X bullets for this barrel, and I really don't want to waste more of them trying to diagnose the barrel when I could just re-allocate them towards the Bart or Brux.

Sometimes the best way to troubleshoot a barrel is to stick it in the closet for a while, and pull it out a few years later.

You might check the actual twist rate of the barrel. Its not unheard of for the occasional wrong twist being stamped on the blank.

I normally run the primer bottomed out in the pocket plus about 4 thou crush. Works a treat.

"Fixed" must be a relative term. The only thing worse than leaving a nine hanging up in the air on shot #20 is when your hear your scorer call, "Nine. One on!"

Been there! Then went on to shoot a 199-12x. Just easier to shoot a 9 out of the gate and take the pressure off lol

I went from sorting , weighing , double checking loads , uniforming primer pockets , flash hole sizing and debarring . Bottoming primers by feel or a slight crush never made a difference for me . Are you positive it's the round ? Possibly something loosened , mount , ring , base or even bi pod. You seem pretty precise on your reloading , odd for it to crap out like that from a change in seating primers.

just out of curiosity, what kind of shooting do you do and what expectations do you have for your loads? not being combative, just curious. I perform every one of those operations
