Primer prices coming down

My local Scheel's store has goodly amounts of primers (SR/LR) at 10% off.

When it comes to primers, my approach is pretty simple. Whatever I use up, I replace X's two. That's served me well as I just broke into my last case (10K) of these.

And why in the world would anyone think a consumer has a right to know what a manufacturer's actual cost is on an item?

It would have never entered my thought process to want to know what manufactures spend on a primer. Until the consumer price went from $29 to $129 in a little over a year. If you don't think some underhanded stuff was going on, then you are mistaken.
It was just supply and demand.
Happens in every industry/product line. Semiconductors, oil, lumber, copper, etc.

When demand exceeds supply, suppliers make a TON of profit - with the low cost producers making the most.
When supply exceeds demand, prices plummet. The high cost produces often face bankruptcy. Suppliers usually continue to manufacture their products as long as the price covers costs just to stay in business.

ETA: That said, wouldn't it be wonderful if we had at least some period of over supply of primers and powder!

Exactly. Add to that the fact that many reloaders themselves drove the panic buying at any price....speculating on price/supply. The guy that uses 100 a season buys 1,000. The guy that uses 1,000 buys 10,000. And on and on.

If someone thinks primer prices are going to go back to pre Covid pricing...they need to change the brand of cigarettes they're smoking. If they don't learn from living through one primer shortage, that's on them the next time things get tight.

I helped a fair number of newer guys that had never been through this before by supplying them with primers to keep them shooting until things eased up. I just asked that they replace them when the supply started catching up. With one exception, they've all done just that.

Good shootin' :) -Al

There may be a difference this time around. There have been several new primer plants spun up and, if I've got it right, a few more in development. My assumption is that the new capacity coming on line is a fairly small % of the world wide supply, but, if one or more of the on going wars cools down - maybe, just maybe supply will exceed demand.

Just fyi. Republic Ammunition has been selling White River small rifle primers for awhile at $288/5K. And, Ekact from Maylaysia at $240/5K.

Right before Covid hit I was buying whatever primer I wanted for $35-40/brick. I wished I would've bought about 50 more had I known they were going to triple/quadruple overnight and never return.

I see small rifle cci 400/450s and rem 7.5s for $75-80/brick now and large or large magnum cci and federal is $120-125/brick. I have a hard time paying that much.

These have been on sale for 57 bucks with free shipping over $100. for a week. Not much longer, don't wait.

I bought 10 bricks in two separate orders. Not hoarding, just planning ahead.;)

Sadly, the free shipping was nullified by the new CO 6.5% ammunition tax.

Dang that’s pretty good from Midway $280 per 5000.

Supply and demand, pretty simple in my mind. If you had to pay top dollar for primers over the last 5 years or so because you weren’t sitting on a decent supply now might be a good time to buy enough for the coming years. Maybe wait a few more months if you want to pay bottom dollar but the last wave of obnoxious pricing on primers will happen again, rest assured.

I had plenty pre Covid to supply myself and I helped a fair amount of my friends who got caught unprepared. I’ve added to the stash here and there and recently started buying in quantities again with the recent sales. I might be buying a bit too soon but I’d like to get my supply back where it was.
