Primer for .308 winchester

ive looked at some reloading manuals and all of them have said to use large rifle primers for 308. ive looked online and have found several forums that say you can use both small and large rifle primers. anyone know for sure if its one or the other? edit: ive got Federal American Eagle brass and a few sig sauer brass to be reloaded

308 Palma brass is small rifle primer
You can’t mix them up meaning large won’t come close to going into small pocket at all and small will just fall out of large pockets.

There is a dimensional difference between them..
Which ever brass you choose whether large or small rifle primer pockets, just order the appropriate size primer for that application. Personally I load large rifle primer brass and prefer those for cold weather / mid range shooting.

You can use either. But the LRP's are what I'd characterize as more versatile in providing good ignition in a much wider range of ambient temperature conditions. The SRP's may not give you the performance you'd typically expect in very low temperature conditions.

Living and shooting a lot here in the warmest areas of Arizona, I've used SRP's a lot in my .308 and they've performed quite well. I like them when firing hot loads in the higher temperatures . . . AND, the smaller primer pockets hold up better with the higher pressures of the hotter loads.

Hope this helps in giving you some ideas regarding ignition issues.

PS: Along with that, the powder one is using can be a factor as well.

If you’re asking this question you really need to slow down on the reloading idea and do some reading……..
IMONMost likely the OP knows the difference between LR & SR. He wants to confirm which works for the .308.

Brass for Small rifle primers is sometimes marked at the headstamp as 308win PALMA or 308win SRP.
I've not seen all the types of SRP 308win brass out there, but there are some that do not have that kind of identification on the headstamp, like Alpha Munitions SRP brass.

As has been noted, .308 Win Small Rifle Primer (SRP) or "Palma" brass uses small rifle primers, standard .308 Win brass uses large rifle primers (LRP). You need to know which type of brass you are using and order the appropriate primer for it.

Loads in .308 Win SRP brass may exhibit hang fires in temps under about 20 degrees F or so with some powders due to the lesser brisance, or "explosive potential. Large rifle primer brass primer pockets are more sensitive to pressure and may have shorter life due to the lesser amount of metal around the primer pocket (i.e. mechanically weaker). Thus, choosing the type of .308 brass for the intended purpose is a consideration. For example, hunters that may be out in low temps, but are probably not using high pressure loads may be better off using LRP brass, whereas F-TR shooters that plan to run stout competition loads will usually be better served using SRP brass.

As someone else mentioned, finding large rifle primers is nearly impossible. I recently purchased 100 6.5 CM cases (Starline) in small rifle to preserved my large rifle primers for 308.

Please make sure your friend loading for your loading friend knows the difference between small primer and large primer loads.
