Primer for .308 winchester

You use the primer size that your brass uses. Some makes use SR, some LR. What is your brass primer pocket size ? It isn't rocket science..
ive looked at some reloading manuals and all of them have said to use large rifle primers for 308. ive looked online and have found several forums that say you can use both small and large rifle primers. anyone know for sure if its one or the other? edit: ive got Federal American Eagle brass and a few sig sauer brass to be reloaded

american eagle is large primer

Reloading manuals state their basic criteria such as the overall length of a loaded round, projectile weight, type of powder and, when referring to velocity, barrel length.

Manuals generally do not 'say to use' large primers, rather their load data generally assumes large primers are used. I use both large and small in .308 depending on the application, however the load changes if the primer size changes. This is one reason load testing in your rifle is important.

As you will have seen from comments posted above, you have the choice of large or small primers depending on the application.

gas Gun or Bolt Gun could make a difference ???

You're buying bullets, primers, and powder, plus your crimped brass needs additional prep.
Unless your friend works for free, and has considerable experience, you'd be very close to
buying factory loaded ammo.
And sleep a lot better.

i can get 100 bullets for about $30, and im finding CCI benchrest large rifle primers for about $15.99 for 100. so im only paying like $60-$80 for materials as compared to about $150 for 100 rounds of new ammo

Add like $40 for powder.
Not sure which ammo you're buying, but if you're looking for match practice ammo:
Pretty Sure About AAC 175 Sierra match currently for $1.00 rd., 175 OTM for $.90 rd.

If you do want to learn reloading, you've found the best forum on the planet.
Your money, your (his) time; enjoy.

if your friend doesn't know, there's no way in hell I would shoot what he reloads.
I think there are a lot of assumptions that the other guy doing the reloading has seen the brass or doesn't know what he is doing.......... The guy is merely getting components together to give the guy. Cut some slack.

That said - I'd want to know that ANYONE loading DOES know what he is doing before I shot it, regardless. I don't think I have ever shot ammo loaded by someone else in my gun.
