primer cratering and boltface pitted

thinking it's ok to use the same loads with different make bullets all the while disregarding length and bearing surfaces.

Is this what you were looking for? VLD 210 and ELD-X 212,,,,and the ELD-X 212 has a longer bearing surface, and longer and ELD shot fine with a grain more. ;-)

I think it's soot. I can't discern any brass extrusion. The lettering is still clear and not swiped.
You can get an ejector mark without swiping. If you look at the pics of the primer they are not flat. They are extruded out for about 1/8 inch around firing pin strike. You can also see it on the bolt face. Then you have the etching that takes place where the outer edge of the primer is. I believe if you distorting primers like this under the pressure they have, you are asking for trouble. Enlarge the pics and you can clearly see both. Matt

The evidence points to a defective prime.

The used bolt face already showed some roughness.

The defective primer added a pock mark that does no harm.

I would continue to shoot the rifle, as is. If another primer vents, try new primers with a different lot number.

The worst one i have shot.

Tacdrvr, In my post #38 I said wash your bolt , disassembled, and check the interior for protruding bushing ! That little flame cutting is NOT AN ACCIDENT WAITING to HAPPEN ! you would think with so much experience you would know that .
What is a possible safety issue is a bushing installed improper, especially if it's moving .
You ask for answers ( guesses , based on pics ) then pick apart posts that are trying to help , what do you work for the media .
Sorry , but no coffee yet , yes I'm grouchy , again sorry .

Tack by any chance have you changed lot # on the powder, seen some really hot stuff come off the line like R-22 had a big problem years ago. If you have a Cronograph I,d be checking to see how fast your rifle is shooting both bullets, you don't want them over 3000 fps.

I understand what you are trying to say, but I rather send the rifle / bolt to the gunsmith that worked on it. He may have overlooked the cratering around the firing pin hole on the bolt face when he trued the action and installed the barrel. He should have contacted me about it and I would have told him to get a new bolt and true it up to the action, etc. Of course you may be grouchy, don't mind either, I am grumpy as well because of the bolt face.

IMHO, get another smith. No decent smith would return to the customer a bolt face like that without telling you that it has issues that should be dealt with. The bolt nose was never touched.... possibly, remotely so, that the lugs had good contact with the abutments and they were left alone or lapped lightly in which case I don't consider that "truing" an action.
