Primer Choice for BRA

Currently shooting BR4's in my BRA and they are shooting very well, also tested some Wolf srm's which didn't shoot as well as the BR4's. Planning to test some CCI 450's as well as some Fed. 205M's. Was curious what every one else is having success with.

I think you have to build up your load around your primer. If you develop a good load with one primer and then just start swapping primers the results
Of the other primers probably won’t be good unless you redo your load development for each one.

I had the opposite experience lol. Had a load developed with the wolf’s. Then swapped in the br4 and they didn’t work well at all. Now I just make sure I have enough of the same lot and same primer to get through a barrel and stick with that so I’m not chasing too much

I use Wolfs in one, 400s in another. In this current environment, I believe I would start load work in a new barrel with whatever I have a few thousand of, be it 450, 400, br4, russian, 205M, 7-1/2 - whatever.

I’ve had good luck with all three in the 6BRA. But like Falfan2017 said need to work up a load with each primer.

CCI 450. Been using them for years in the Dasher.
I have a brick of Fed 205M that work well for fire forming loads because Feds are softer.

450s worked well for me in two barrels... the plain 400s worked the best but unfortunately would get more than the occasional piercing...

When you test the primer shoot a few groups at different powder charges, cover some ground. The primer moves the node a little. But there are guys shooting very well on every primer out there. You just need to test to see which one you combo likes best.

Hard to test different primers today. You cannot get any.

I just felt bad for a fellow and sold him 1,000 BR4's so he could shoot. I never liked them, not because they did not work, because they are so expensive.

I say find a source of primers and then work up a load with that primer and forget more changes. The primers are just not readily available today.

Since I have 27 rounds loaded all at the same charge and seating depth, I think I'll see how each primer affects velocity and then try to tweak a few extra rounds each and see if they improve or degrade.

They will effect velocity. In my experience the velocity that the barrel will want to shoot will change. For example my current barrel shot at 2920-2930 with a br4 but wanted to be down around 2900 with 205s. The 205s would shoot smaller but the window was tiny, the br4 was more forgiving in this barrel.
