PRIMER CATCHER FOR RCBS PRESSES

I just dug up an old RCBS and it still looks great. Would like to use it for de-priming. It say "RS" on the side. Got a primer catcher for it? PM with details if you do. The one I got for the RC works great!

Got mine a while back and only used it a bit ago. Works fine BUT, I see it catching on the ram up stroke at times. Wants to lift the Primer Catcher off the press at so I'll have to take a close look and see what a file can do if used in the proper place.;) Still don't care for the plastic "wedge" that fits in the side of the ram but, I'll learn to live with it. Other than that, love it!;)

I have seen that happening when the decapping happens too low, e.g. when the die is screwed in very low and the spent primer falls down the slot in the ram and then hits the catcher below the slot in the catcher. On the up-stroke with the next shell, it gets between the ram and the catcher and pushes the catcher up. If you see that happening, it will not be possible to fix it with a file.
Below is what I put on the small instruction sheet a while ago - it is based on RCBS' recommendation how to install the decapping die.

In case that does not work for you, send me a pm with your name/address and I will get a new one out to you. Oh - the small plastic part for the front of the ram is not always needed - it is solely to prevent about 1% of the primers jumping out the front (at least that is what I had on my press, I heard from others that they never saw that problem)

Decapping Die Installation

First, run the ram to the top of the reloading press stroke with the shell holder installed, then screw the resizing die into the press until it stops against the shell holder. Now to remove all play, lower the ram and turn the die 1/8 to 1/4 turn farther in. Check the adjustment by returning the shell holder to the top of its stroke--you should feel the press cam over center. Now set the large lock ring and your die is adjusted to properly full length resize cases and will work nicely with the primer catcher.

It is also important that the decapping pin is only far enough out to just push the spent primers out (about 3/16”). Further out and you may not catch all primers as chances that primers stick to the pin are getting higher!

I "fixed" that problem long before I bought the catcher for my IV.

Its a piece of 1/4" key stock worked down for a slight interference fit in the slot, it's top tapered so the primers only have one way to go, out the back. The two reasons for it? One, on occasion a primer would take flight out the priming arm slot and two, since I only use a bench or hand primer so I didn't need or use it anyway. After closing the slot and adding the catcher I haven't had to vacuum primer one off the floor.

I radiused and chamfered the bottom of the RCBS catcher and put a spring mounted to a small piece of balsa-wood to keep the catcher close to the ram. It works fine.

Yes, that is similar to what I did initially before I had the 3D printer, but my problem was that it most of the time spilled primers all over the floor when I tried to take the catcher off the press. It's not so much about the RCBS one being completely useless, more about a cleaner, more convenient solution for myself.

Hi TG

There is a technique to smoothly removing the RCBS primer catcher: One needs to gently pull the catcher pans apart and rotate them upwards away from the ram!

It only took me a year to figure it out!:D

The "gently" part never worked for me :) But a few hundred Dollars in printer hardware and a few weeks of prototyping later, I have something that is appropriate for my low motoric skills - and for my wife with her incredibly low tolerance with spent primers on the basement floor.

Please ask your wife to wear shoes or slippers when in basement.
Impossible task with a dog that picks up the primers in his pads. I used to fear the day when I was decapping live primers without the German's add-on and the dog started to run up the stairs to bark at passers by.

What are your thoughts around the primer catcher with the (removable) case ejector integrated into the catcher? Your input is greatly appreciated!
Here a short video on how it works:
