premium airgauged douglas barrel

Just put my second one on a savage. I shoot 1 inch at 300 with my 284 shehane in a 20mph wind off of a harris bipod pushing 180 berger at 2850(first load tried, 52grn of rl17). My new one is a 6.5 284 norma no turn and it shot 0.5 inch at 127 with my second load tried, from the bench. 142smk loaded with 48.3 of imr4831. I use all lee equipment with whidden dies for the 6.5, and a hornady 7mm sizer with bonanza seater for the fireforming of the shehane. Hadn't tried any fireformed brass through the whiddwn sizer and wilson seater.that I cut. The 6.5 is on a savage pta kelby stock and the shehane is a model 11 accutrigger 11 on the factory plastic with no additional prep.

And the double button barrels are even better. You can get one of those in 30 and 6mm. Not my place to say, but we may see more double button barrels from those guys in the future ;) . Reduced copper fouling from a smoother barrel. And neither of my barrels have been shot enough to break in, but that is soon to change.

my lack of knowledge is showing,- i just went to the Douglas web page, and there is nothing i can find on that page, "barrell description" that says "double button"

where does this term come from.

they speak of "air Gage" having .0001" end to end tolernce, but i found nowhere the terms being used in this post.

they speak of "Premium" as being straighter than most and mark XX

button rifling is a process of moving a 'carbide button" through the predrilled hole in the blank,
vs hammer forged, and cut rifling,

what is "double button"

Not sure how to exactlly describe it, but I will give it a go. From what I was told, it is basically a button that is followed by an additional button that is attached to it making an even smoother rifled surface. I have saw 30 plus rounds fired between cleanings that clocked over 3800fps that only took 2 patches to remove all copper fouling. Any round going that fast is going to leave some copper, but the double button process is by far a better barrel. Not meaning to take anything away from their regular barrels, but I am waiting for the day when they do it to the 7 and 6.5mm. Give Stan Taylor a call and he will steer you in the right direction. Expect about a 4 week turn around, plus ship time.

The last one I got was in 224 TTH for a Savage action. It put 3 shots into less than 2 in. at 600 yrds. I`ve had a few and all shot well except for a 257 AI and I blame that on the smith I had do the work.

I believe the info you are looking for is the process starts normally for button formed rifling, then a second button either follows on the same pass or on a second pass and smooths the tops of the lands and provides a very consistant bore diameter.

Follow the WVIBS and see how many non-Douglas barrels win. My guess is that there are more barrel makers now than there ever has been. Plus some people think that to get an accurate barrel, you have to spend the most money.

Whats WVIBS? I googled and got World Vacation Bible School. I check out the equipment lists (on Sanctioned Registered Matches) on most point blank match reports and I don't recall seeing Douglas listed in the last 20 years....of course it could be the best kept secret in BR.....or not.

West Virginia International Benchrest. I do believe the 2001 light rifle IBS record.was set with a Douglas barrel... I spectated 1 match last year, only saw one shooter.advertising someone elses barrel. Saw an 11 year old shoot a light group that measured 2.27 with a Douglas barrel. First match this.year is.next Saturday at Whitehorse Range Buchannon,WV. I'd bet that half of the field will have Douglasbarrels, and you will see some of those at the top of the list.

LHSmith,
Stanley Taylor and Tim Gardner from Douglas Barrels are IBS 1,000 yard Competitors.

I think it would be very nice if everyone stopped talking about Douglas barrels. Think back to the # of times when the maker was listed as unknown. Keep up the noise and they will follow Walter Birdsong's fantastic work out of the reach of the common shooter.

They have only been building barrels since the 1940's. First time I had heard of them was as a young tike looking at dad's 1967 Gun Digest list of manufacturs. Always wanted a Douglas barrel. Now I have 2 and want a bunch more. Always wanted an Ultra Light Arms 284 win, met Melvin Forbes last year, great man.Tim Gardner is also a gentleman you can sit down and gain great knowledge from.
