preferred 6mm barrel maker?

Most of my custom barrels have been Kriegers, all chambered for the .308 Winchester. They've given superb barrel life and very good accuracy. Also have one good old Hart that just won't die. Gotta love that barrel. It too is a .308,although it started life as a .300 maggie).

Are there one or two barrel makers who dominate the 6mm barrel market? Should I stick with Krieger when I order up a 6mm tube because I've had good results from them in the .308 Win or is it time to branch out and give someone else my business?

Still torn about the exact cartridge I'm going to use. It will be primarily a 600 yard prone rifle, on a Win Model 70 action.

Regards, Guy

Guy, If it ain broke... :D

That said, Broughton is making a 5C barrel, and hopefully the non-standard rifling,5r/c/p) will help squeeze the most out of the 6mmBR

This is why i have a broughton waiting in the wings :D

shilen hart and kreiger seem to be the most popular in PPC's and Douglas are used alot too...

now if you want a 7.5 for the 115gn bullets, schneider may be the only shoice, not sure...

So, glad i could confuse the situation more :p

Krieger will make a 7.5" twist 6mm, I have one chambered in 6xc for the 115's, haven't tried it yet though. also like Broughton and Hart.

To further confuse matters my PacNor 3-groove Super Match is excellent and fouls the least of any barrel I've ever seen.

Broughton, Hart, Krieger, PacNor, Schneider--they're all making excellent 6mm tubes. And check the 6PPC equipment lists--you'll still find plenty of Shilens...

Talk to Pac-nor they may be able to hook ya up!

They are great to do business with and my rig likes the 3 groove 1-8 SM 6.5x55Se it wears.

It never hurts to shoot them an email or call!

Yep, I have to agree with Editor in Chief & Rhino about Pac Nor. I have a 3 groove Super Match 1:10 twist on my 6mm/284 and it has very little fouling. It is supremely accurate as well - consistent groups of 1/2 - 3/4 inch at 200 metres. My best group at 100 was 5 shots under 1/4 inch.

I found Penny to be friendly and professional. My next project,6mm Dasher??) will use their barrel again.

Michael.

I'm shooting a 7 twist Krieger 31" finished 1.25" staright contour in my 6 BR Imp. It is probably the best shooting BBL I have ever had on a rifle period. Don't know if you'll be lucky enough to get one that'll shoot like this one, but if I were ordering another one right now there's no question what it would be.

Mike

I am shooting Shilen, Pac Nor, Kreiger, Hart and a Hammonds. They all shoot well except the Hammonds,,candidate for rechamber) and I bought another Pac Nor for my HBR rifle project. I think Kreiger is making some great barrels right now.

Mike

I'm not aware that Clarence Hammonds has ever made barrels. He puts his name on barrels that he has chambered and I've never known of any problems with the quality of his work. Clarence Hammonds is a top shelf gunsmith, so let's make sure the facts are straight. Is this particular barrel one that you acquired via a trade or did it come on a rifle you bought? Hammonds will use whatever barrel you request.

Jason is having a 6BR chambered up with a Broughton 5C right now and we should have a report on it soon. It will be interesting to see whether it delivers the reputed "bonus velocity" some folks think you get with canted land profiles.

I would also agree that Krieger is making some very fine tubes these days. And PacNor's three-grooves are sweet, with generally quick turn-around on custom contours.

Not to sound like a broken record but, stick to one barrel maker. If your smith has a particular preference, go with it. If a certain discipline has a devoted following towards one maker over another, there is probably a very good reason for it.

Some day, Tim will get a 6mm button that makes a true 8 twist. For now, the barrels marked 8 are 8.5. Be advised.

Alan
I just cant seem to understand the reason that the button has anything to do with the twist rate. Am I missing something here ?

I have ultimate faith in what Alan Warner says. Anyone who's seen his work knows how maticulous he is about products that go out of his shop. I guarentee if he says they're 8.5, he measured them or got the word strait from Tim North's mouth.

If the Broghton is indeed an 8.5 twist, it will almost surely be faster than an 8 twist. Probably not by much, but it should be faster. I doubt a long tube 8.5 twist will give any trouble out of 105/107's. Guess we'll see soon enough.

My 6BR wears a 31" Border 6 groove, 8 twist. Cut rifled. It is superb.

Chris...

There tends to be variations in button rifled barrels. I believe I heard or read that cut rifled tend to be more on the money in twist rate than button rifled barrels.

I believe that percision shooting magizine writer Robert Whitley was saying at an event that some 1-8 twists won't stabilize the DTAC's, so your better off with a 1-7.5 twist to be sure.

Hi on the twist rate issue i have a new 6.9 twist 224 barrel that i am testing thr actual button twist was 6.5 there is a slight amount of button slippage when the rifling is created so some manufacturers may use measured twists while others may use the button rate wich will certainly be faster that the true barrel rate. The barrels are being sold as 7 twist barrels to make sure they are correct in twist rate. I Hope i cleared some of it up.

Button design does give the twist rate. Besides having the right design button, Shilen has a sine bar on their rifling machine to help control the twist rate.
