Model 70?

Looking for some input here, I've got a Win 70 match rifle, post '64 push feed, built for Palma & cross-course competition) that's had many different .308 barrels for 15 - 20 years. It's one heck of a .308 Palma rifle.

Am interested in getting a 6mm BR barrel for it, for 600 - 1000 yard prone matches... Can the model 70 set up with a 6mm BR be competive in prone High Power matches?

Should I consider Tubbs 6mmXC instead?

Looking to get the advantages of a 6mm, accuracy w/minimal recoil, but for highpower rather than benchrest use. Sometimes I shoot this rifle with sights, sometimes with a 6.5-20x Leupold. Primarily at 500 and 600 yard prone matches.

Regards, Guy

I am in the same boat. Looking to do a 6BR or the XC. Not real sure the difference in capacity between the improved br stuff and the XC. I might can hotrod the standard BR and get what I want, or the improved do it easier, the XC is at home with the 115gr stuff. The smith I have talked to has just got a new xc reamer and I will probably go that route.

Interested to see others opinions in this matter.

Guys,
The 6BR has enough capacity to do the job. Biggest problem with shooting one over the course is getting it to feed out of a rifle. The shorter case tends to nosedive in magazines, especially when heavy bullets are used. This, and the blunt shape of the cartridge makes feeding a bit more tricky - get it wrong, and the rifle tries to shove the bullet into one of the locking lug recesses. Single stack mags are usually the most successful means of getting a 6BR to feed. With a Remington or Winchester, you're probably better off with a slightly longer cartridge.

DO NOT hotrod a 6BR case, especially if Norma brass is used. Norma cases have thinner heads - more capacity. Also makes it possible to rupture the unsupported section of the case. About a year ago, someone blew up a TUBB 2000 with just such a combination. As I understand, the unsupported section of case in a TUBB 2000 is similar to that in a Remington 700. A pre-64 Winchester Model 70 has an even larger unsupported section, due to the cone breech and the extractor cut.

Let's be safe out there. Remember, at 2600 FPS, the 6BR has similar ballistics to a 190 Sierra @ 2550 FPS. When the .308 ruled highpower, the 190 ruled the 600 yard line.

Actually mine will be a F class gun, not cross the course. More interested in the chambering opinions for use. Not planning on hotrodding that much. The smith is using a 6BR at the moment and aproaching 6 dasher velocity. No loss of primers yet. Haven't talked to him in a few weeks. I don't really know how hot his loads are, but I know I am conservative compared to many.
