Predator Mouth Calls

I had a Burnham Bros. rabbit in distress mouth call for many years and I loved it. I lost it and would like to get another. I have checked their website and they don't offer that one any longer. I would appreciate any recommendations from you guys/gals for a good mouth call for coyotes and bobcats.
Thanks, Mike
P.S. I have NO interest in any electronic calls.

I know there's a lot of good new ones out there, but I find myself going with a few of my tried and true ones from waaayy back. Johnny Stewarts PC3 is my favorite LOUD call, and one that you can make a wide range of sounds with. And another is my Weems All Call with interchangeable reeds for cottontail or jack. (less volume) I also have called a lot of dogs both accidently and on purpose with my elk cow call. I've got a Lil Dog howler, but I sound like crap, and have never called a single dog with it. I also have never gone electronic, not for prejudicial reasons or anything; I just like to keep things simple. jd

I have an old set of Sceery calls.
Maybe try google search for them.
Tha jack rabbit is a bit loud for me.
I was thinking about trying the MFK brand someday, but don't know much about them except for what I see on videos.
Hope this helps.

The sound itself isn't that important. The emotion you put into the call is what attracts the predators. At times, a soft distress works, while at other times, a brutal distress sound works.

I still have my Weems All Call, still sounds as good as it did 35 years ago!
With that being said, I have thought about trying the MFK calls, just to try a diaphragm style call. I wouldn't think it should be too difficult, since I use them for turkey hunting.
Never know until I try!

I still have one of those old Burnham Bros. C-3 fox calls from the 80's. It works great on red foxes. I also had and lost one of their close range calls, it was two flat pieces of plastic with a thin reed sandwiched between. I made a replacement out of two pieces of flat wood and a rubberband. I also have had good luck with a hand call from PS Olt.

There's some NOS Stanley Scruggs calls floating around on evilbay.I like his fawn distress call, sort of universal.Works for Deer hunting as well as predators. My boys keep swiping mine, deny it.....then see them hanging around their neck....doh.

Thanks for another coyote thread to help me at least enjoy memories. I'm finally healed up from my shattered heel bone, and our fur season is over. Been hearing the coyotes howling and yipping with their springtime shenanigans not more than a few hundred yards from my yard. We've got both river and train tracks that go right through our little Mayberry here, and the yodel bugs use both pretty heavily.

Our crop of feral cats is off the charts this year, and we actually need a little help with them. Maybe this next crop of pups will lend a hand.:)jd

I also picked mine up at their shop in Marble Falls in the 80's. It was a wood call and called in everything from coyotes to bobcats, owls and one cougar. I sure miss it!!

My dad has called every kind of predator in the world and has a trophy room to show for it.
He only uses one call.
The Burnham brothers mini blaster.
But its not the call but the caller blowing the call that makes them work.

I like the Song dog by Major Boddicker in Colorado.it makes some very good sounds, puppy whines work extremely well with it.Of course the Weems wild call is great too,as are a lot of others. It pays to get a variety for your kit.Call the Major he is a wealth of information.

Another call that I take with me wherever I go, is the back of my hand. By kissing it with my lips, I have called a few, and used that sound to stop dogs that were starting to circle. With very little practice, you can make several appealing sounds that carry surprisingly far. I've tested it on my own dog.

One time when quail hunting, I spotted a pair of young coyotes ranging away from me about two hundred yards out. I immediately gave a few lip squeals with the back of my hand and one of them wheeled around and ran back to me. I dumped him at about ten yards with my 20 gauge and #8 quail shot. My bird dog was as surprised as the coyote.

I use many different calls. Seems like most of the time I find a favorite for "that year". Changes some most every year. Probably the one I've used the most is a Ed Sceery "hyper hot" cow elk call. It's able to do a variety of sounds and is easy to make work. Some I've got seem to wear me out after a set or 2! Psycho tweety is another easy blower and works very well. Good luck

A guy with "yote" in his name oughta know.:)

I can think of a dozen or so times when bowhunting for elk that a coyote has appeared after I had been squeaking around with my cow/calf call. I don't know if they plan on eating an elk, or if my elk calling sucks. In any case, the cow calls can make a damned fine imitation of a tortured rabbit also. jd

Mikemci,

The call that you lost, was it a black one with a button on the mouth piece or a split mouth piece, open reed? I have a hundred or more mouth calls, I used the PC-1 and PC-3 a lot.
I may have an extra, if you can describe it for me

A chimp could call in a coyote with this call:

I have called in deer, elk, two black bear, bobcats, foxes, and no telling how many coyotes with this call. I set it for the long distance which is a very coarse sounding call, then tweek it for close for a bird sounding call or mouse.

Let me know on the description of the Johnny stewart call.

I chreish the Weems Duo tone call... Dang, all my hunting partners got them all! Hee Hee!

Keith, it was a Burnham Bros. call. Two piece wood. Internal reed. Thanks for your help.

Yep, this little call is probably one of the best ones I have ever tried. Well worth every penny and I have had way more responses with this call than any other. I have tried a lot of calls. They all sound good, but this one flat slap works!!!!!

Look at Johny Stuart calls.

Rare Earth calls are the ones I've been using lately. They are a closed reed type, except for the howler and are very easy on the eyes.

Zepps has some nice stuff if you're looking at open reed howlers or distress calls. They are very good in windy conditions where a guy needs a louder call to make it happen. The howlers they have can also make a very nice pitched howl in a variety of styles.

The smaller howler is great for coyote distress/kay-yi sounds.

I've used MFK calls quite a bit as well. I'm not a huge fan of mouth calls but they certainly have very realistic sounds. I hunt in ND lots of open areas, so I don't feel I can get the volume I need from many mouth calls.

Having said that, primos elk calls (diaphragm/mouth) are great options for coyote calls as well. Easy to make many different sounds and tones.

Johnny Stewart's howler is another good one for coyote vocalizations.
