Precision Matthews 1440GT or South Bend Sb1114F lathe?

Anyone here actually been hands on with both these machine that can give an opinion? The PM 1440GT has 2" spindle, 40" between centers, and 15 1/2" spindle lenght...all perfect for chambering barrels, but it does not have EVS. The southbend 13x30 EVS is only 30" between centers with a 1.65" spindle, that is 21 1/2" lenght, but it's EVS with 5 hp motor. Looking for input on which one to go with...

SB is now made by Grizzly, not bad machines but I would go PM. I have there 12-36 and love it. Any issues or questions, there customer service is tops and very knowledgeable. Wait for the PM

I think most of the Taiwan Precision Matthews machines have an exact Eisen copy and are made in same facility.

The one problem you might have with the Eisen 1440EV or the PM 1440 HVT2 is having it up against a wall. Seems there is no front accessible chip pan/tray.

I waited 4 months or so for an RML-1440 from PM. I don’t see it on their website anymore but would guess Matt could still get them(?).

I’ve been running a PM 1440BV for 8 years now. VFD and DRO installed from them. You do have to swap gears manually but it’s not a big deal…you get pretty fast at it. I’ve had zero issues and would take a close look. I didn’t have the budget for totally enclosed gear box and the VFD /DRO package which I wanted more. If I had the $$ and space I’d buy another in a heartbeat.

My shop usually stays clean. But I will admit I have learned my lesson tracking chips in the house. My wife wasn’t too happy.
It’s just as easy to clean as you go…

Personally, I wouldn't buy one of the new SB lathes made by Grizzly, they're not even South Bends, IMO. I have a lot of experience with older South Bend lathes, and the Heavy 10 is the sweet spot for home shops.

That said, a lot of people don't like buying or fixing old machines. I'm not one of them.;)

I would wait and get the PM you want, don't let a few weeks change your plans.
