Precision Air Rifles

I almost got a Benjamin Kratos in 25 but got a 22. Been itching for a 25 or even a 30
I have a 25 cal and it meets my needs well enough that I’ve never wanted anything bigger. 140 shots per fill and the pellets are cheap enough I can shoot it all I want without worrying about the cost.

I can cast for the bigger calibers as I'm set up for pouring my own already.

Ya know Mark, you could have pulled the regulator out of your Disco, installed the .045" hammer spring and filled to 3200 psi instead of 2500. You could have then run 33.89 grain JSBs at about 850 fps plus. My magnum 22 cal Discos will run with most factory 25 cals for power level. Just sayin.:) Mike

Yeah, but now I have two guns….lol

I bought a legendary old school Feinwerkbau 300S in mint condition at my local pawn shop, cheap, before they could research values on the Interweb. As you know it has a "recoilless" action. They were the thing at one time for Olympic competition. Built like a Swiss watch, amazing precision, but only about 600 fps as I recall.

300's are great 10m rifles. But they were not built for nor gain their fame as Olympic rifles. The target audience was as Club Guns. Given gun laws in Europe gun clubs had rifles belonging to the club . Members would come to the clubs to shoot. These 300 series are tanks, shoot forever as long as they are shot on a regular basis. There have been documented guns with over a million pellets fired from them. Like all spring guns if left sit and not used seals will die before their time. I have one and consider it the easiest air gun for a newby to sit down and shoot well right away. I shoot mine at 22 yards off a benchrest set up. A good group at 22 yards (20 meters) looks like a single 6mm bullet hole. The last spring gun to win at the Olympics was an Anschutz 380, don't buy one, no service or parts availability I am told and I believe it was a side cocker pneumatic not a true Springer but it falls into the spring gun class by rule. The FWB 601 thru 603 are also SSP gun, single stroke pneumatic, considered Springer by rule There rifles have zero recoil and great accuracy but not spring powered. Target velocity for the 300 out of the factory was about 560fps but they offered a winter spring that boosted it to around 630 fps.

I had an Anschutz 2002 SuperAir SSP.

Highly accurate, great trigger, and I didn't mind the side-cocking lever since I also shoot a TX200.

I sold it last year because once the valve goes, that's it. Mine as well try searching for fresh Dodo eggs.

I haven't shot it for quite a few years, need to get it out. Thanks for the prod. I gather it's possible to find service for it if required. I really ought to sell it. I have a scoped Beeman R7 (HW30) within reach for yard vermin, much handier, more smack, and plenty accurate enough.

For as good as my 300 and pair of Diana 75s shoot, at 20 meters and beyond my TX200 and LGU are my choice. That 560 fps bleeds of pretty quickly. If I can find it I do have a super 1 hole 5 shot group it 20 meters with the 300. If I find it I will post it. Ok, second row from top, second bull from left, pink bull has a 5 shot group outside it at 10:00. The Orange bull below I had 4 in a hole and blew it on the fifth shot.20250306_212926.jpg

These were shot with my FWB 300 at 15 paces (~meters) indoors. Only one 5-shot group for each pellet type, a very quick and dirty pellet comparison, not concentrating on forming the ultimate group.

I have a Zasadny Modified 2002. When the valve goes he (Allen Zasadny) fits a Steyr valve in its place. Not sure how that valve works if the gun is near original power. Mine is at 18.5 ft-lb.

I have been shooting my Benjamin Trail last couple days I must have gained some strength not as bad to break down these days...it was a monster when I first started
When I bought my Diana 54 in .22 several years ago I thought wow, this is beast the first time I shot it. But as I shot it more and refined the big cocking motion it became easier. It's a good workout for a 78 year old. I have watched 40 year olds struggle to clock it and laugh, especially big guys, lol. 40 shots out of it and you know where your chest muscles are. But its very sccurate and a groundhog killing machine.

I was introduced to Precision Air Guns in my Junior/Senior years of HS as a supplement to my JROTC Smallbore Rifle Team. Since our school had no onsite Smallbore Range, we were in constant need of scheduling Smallbore Practice at other schools within our County. This was a logistical issue solved in part by building an Air Gun Range in one of the satellite bldgs behind the school. Since my particular bus schedule delivered me to school just over an hour before classes began, I used at least 2 of those days each week to practice my weakest position, Offhand.
My Smallbore scores improved overall and I was smitten. We shot FWB 300 series .177 rifles and HyScore 816 Air Pistols (whole new world for me). Vowed I would own both someday. Actually earned my NRA Distinguished Expert Air Rifle award with that FWB.
I have gone through a few over the many decades since. Bought my own HyScore 816 right out of Basic Training on leave and before my AIT. Later bought an Air Arms Khamsin in .177 for plinking/squirrel hunting.

Wanted more power for hunting, so bought a Diana Model 48. Sold the Khamsin to a fellow MP.

While very powerful, it was unforgiving of less than perfect hold in field shooting. Good rifle overall though. Gifted it to my Brother.

Found a nice used FWB 300 (Running Boar?) on Rimfire Central, as well as an FWB 65 Air Pistol. There went the savings account ;).
Still shooting both after 20+ years.

Again, in search of more power, I bought an HW 97 in .20/5MM for field shooting. Very forgiving of imperfect holds and good enough energy for small game (and one unlucky Groundhog).

They all have been instrumental in keeping me sharp when range trips were impractical/impossible.
