air rifles?

does anybody here own any type of high powered air rifle?
Let me explain my questioning, I live in town with a cop next door, there are several trees between my house and his, he has dogs i do not, i have coons that get into my trash which inturn makes me mad becuase then i have to pick it up agian. i have already taken action with my c02 pistol with very little effect, they were gone for a couple days and then came back with a vengence. i do however own some .22 rifles but they are a little too loud for in town, and i cannot afford some sort of fine. Anyhow i almost talked myself into getting an air rifle for the low price of $500 (thats crazy), this old man i know told me to use some cb caps well walmart did not have any. so what i am getting at is, is it worth it to get the air rifle or should i find another way and use that money for a real gun?

shoot yea you can kill coons easy with it any thing as big as a big pit buill or a rotwieller u will have $5000 worth of fun with it

I would keep looking for the cb's. They are much more affective with no more noise than an air rifle. The only down side to them is that they wont cycle in a semi auto, they will still shoot out of one fine you just have to manualy cycle it between shots.

Although youd get a lot more satisfaction blasting these pests, I think youd be far ahead in your situation to buy a live trap and dispose of the varmits in a more legal atmosphere. Either blast em, drown em or release them at least 10 miles from home. As a direct answer to your Q. Any air rifle from the top line Gamo on up will decease a coon with proper shot placement. .22s are better than 177. Head shot at base of ear is usually nearly instantaneous. Use the heaviest ,non-HP pellet available. ONLINE CHECK uMAREX OR PYRAMID AIR. (forgive my fat fingers). Mostly be cautious about any "shooting" in a no fire zone. The bambi cush will trample over you.

Hmmmmmm not sure what cb's are they might even be the same thing. So at the risk of sounding stupid, have you thought of sub sonic .22 rounds. they seem to go ok on the possums here in Aust. and from pics I've seen of these coon things they would be pretty close to the same size. ;D

Subsonic rounds are just that-subsonic. They are not really all that quiet unless you run them through a suppressor.
I would second the CB caps but remember that you can still get nicked for discharging a firearm within city limits, if there is such a restriction where you live, by using CB's.
If the LEO neighbor is a problem I would go with the Hav-a Hart traps as previously suggested.
Not as much fun but a whole lot less problematic than ending up in court.

There are pros and cons with everything mentioned here, except for the live traps.

22 rimfire.....can you legaly shoot one where you are? Or mayby it doesn't matter and you neighbor is cool and will look the other way.

Trapping....what are the odds og hooking your neighbors dog!!!!

I would say live trap...they are cheep and safe.

Then you can take the critters out where you can properly introduce yourself!!!

OUCH!!! I thought there was a good reason why man had progressed past the rubberband powered projectile.

What about trash cans with lockable lids.
Then there is no body to dispose of, no pop followed by the whoops of success, no screeching at 0330 while ya getting ya beauty rest(which we all need) and no harm done to ones digits from antiquated middle ages weapon systems. And maybe, just maybe the little suckers will go to your neighbours bins and when he gets jack of them he can set an example of an acceptable way to deal with the problem on a more permanent and lethal basis. ;D

If I'm not mistaken, there is a Gamo air pellet rifle that is quiet, Mine on the other hand, is not. But it is deadly on squirrells.

honestly i am not too worried about the cop next door, i have heard that he might come over and shoot it for me with his service pistol, but anyhow thanks for all the suggestions.
oh i also have some of the sub sonics and i really can't tell much of a difference in sound with them and lr's. my dad does have a live trap so i might just go that way. any ideas on a good bait?

I don't know what kind of sub-sonics your using but cci .22 cb caps is so quiet you only hear the hammer drop and the sound of impact. no bang no pop just click of the hammer......dead coon. We have laws on top of laws on top of laws but we still live in America and we have a right to protect our property.....a depredation hunt so to speak.
