Pre Neck Turn

I inherited a 6mm br from a friend and with it only came a few brass. I bought some new Lapua and have to turn the neck as the rifle is chambered for a .262 neck.

I know I have to size the brass to a uniform length before I neck turn but my question is this.

Should I cut my brass to the final desired length, then neck turn? Or should I leave it a little long, neck turn it then cut case to final desired length?

In both dimensions you're talking about removing relatively small amounts of metal - it shouldn't make any difference what order you do them in. In both scenarios you will need to deburr your cases.

If the case lengths are not to long when new, I suggest to shoot them (fire-form) at least once before trimming.

For a 262-neck a lot of neck wall has to be removed. Do not try cutting it all off in 1 turn. Take at least 3 passes as well as a couple very light final clean up passes. Heat is a big issue when taking big cuts.

Phil is correct, but I believe you are asking about case trimming before or after neck turning. Whatever neck turning tool you use will have an adjustment for depth of cut. This adjustment should be set so that a tiny fraction of the cut goes into the neck-shoulder junction. Therefore, all the cases need to be the same length before you begin neck turning.

Now I gotta return to neck turning PPC brass this morning.

If you would rather use a no turn neck, you could just open up the neck on the rifle. You probably know this but I thought I would just say, in case you forgot.

Update and please critique as this is a first time neck turning, I obviously never had to do that with my factory heavy barely 222.

I trimmed the brass to a uniform length leaving it .008 long, debured and light chamfer on inside then tumbled the brass to remove any particles.

Now I'm on to neck turning, I'm only cutting .004 off the neck and I had a few cases I boogered while setting up so I used those as test subjects and decided there was no appreciable difference in heat taking 1 cut. After the cut I used a piece of 600 grit sandpaper to make sure all is smooth.

Next?

Should I run them through full length sizer?

Should I leave them long and fire them once as president prescribed above or trim?

Since there is a bit of oil in the neck from turning, is soapy water and drying advised or back in the tumbler?

Since these are unfired, I'm not expecting Robin Hood accuracy first time around, should I load a lighter charge to save powder (recipe calls for 28.5. Maybe load 22gr?)
