Pre-fit barrels?

Several makers have pre-fit/pre-threaded barrels for Savage and Remington actions. Is there a manufacturer that has these for the push-feed Winchester action? I took one of these in on a "horse trade" and the accuracy from the initial firing is a whole lot less that stellar accuracy. I gave it a thorough cleaning, de-carbon and de-copper and haven't tried it since. Just in case it turns out to be a turd, I may want to re-barrel it rather than get rid of it. Pre-fits are usually associated with barrel nut set ups or conversion. I haven’t saw a barrel nut set up done on a Winchester action. Probably easier to just let a gunsmith set you up.

Most are short chambered and need to be finished by a Smith unless they are Savage or Rem/age fit designs

Ebay has a dair amount of factory take offs. A barrel nut style barrel wouldnt be hard to do.
opening the Win 70 up to Remington threads isnt unheard of either. Ptg sells a piloted tap to do it with.
Youve got lots of options, only 1 costs less than a new rifle though

Some companies will make a deep chamber , thereby eliminating the need for a reamer but still requires a lathe to headspace correctly.

I only have one Criterion, but have been pretty impressed with it. Have shot 2" groups at 500 yards. Might be a mistake to overlook Criterion.

That is not how they go about it. The shoulder is purposely left long, typically .010, and the chamber is cut correctly. When your barrel arrives you need to set it up in a lathe and remove .00X amount of shoulder to headspace correctly to your action.

If a chamber were cut deep and you simply cut the end of the chamber off there would be no control of headspacing and you would essentially be relying on the shoulder depth to contol the headspacing. If this was the case they would just send you a true shouldered prefit but they can't do that because factory tolerences are not tight enough. If you tried to use the deep chamber method you would likely have a chamber to deep or to short.

The gun is a post '64 Winchester M 70 22-250 with a Featherweight contour barrel (but does not say Featherweight). I took this out and shot it last evening, after 10 shots it seemed to settle down a bit and give something that resembled a group instead of a pattern. It only seems to want to shoot decently if I pull it hard into my shoulder. A friend I shoot with suggested it may be bedding or maybe the scope (4-12 Nikon Buckmaster) has gone south. He loaned me another scope (6-18 Burris) to verify if mine has crapped out or not, so the saga continues.

Wrong , but I've only installed a few hundred barrels , and use to sell long chambered barrels, for Mausers mostly , in both of my shops . I think I have a half dozen still hanging around .

How do you aquire the proper chamber headspace? Do you set the chamber back to proper headspace for the bolt without the action and then set the shoulder back to fit the action for bolt face to barrel clearance?

The deep chamber only requires the shoulder and tenon to be cut , on the lathe . Tenon threads are not made longer , when the shoulder is cut it extends the threaded portion without actually having them make it longer .
Having the deep chamber has the added benefit of having only one diam neck . Using 2 or more reamers , even though saami, has the possibility of one reamer at max spec and the last at min spec thereby giving a 2 dia neck . I've literally done hundreds in a year or two back in the early 80s at my uncles gun shop . It was far easier faster and more economical for us and the customer . 15-25 mins versus 4-5 hours .

@Stan Taylor can fix you up with a barrel to fit your action. No need to mess with a nut but that wouldnt be hard to do either. Any gunsmith could make you a nut setup
