Pre-fit barrel compatibility?

So then the gunsmith cuts the threads on the barrel some oversized to match the “oversized “ action?

I thought barrel/action would be trued/threaded to a standard?

I tried to thread a bolt one time for my truck, it worked ok. That’s my level of machining but I have great interest in this stuff.

no you cut them a minimum amount that cleans up to your satisfaction. Most cut just enough to straighten them out so theyre not 100% cut. I have seen some cut a bunch but they are thin. And yes just like any factory action you will need to fit the barrel to the action- even on untrued threads- since no 2 are alike. Anything else is just good enough.

The best way is to use a shoulder, not a nut.

No one thinks smashing their nuts into a wall is a good idea, so why start with barrels.

Anymore companies like Impact, Siller, ARC, Bighorn, Kelbly, Bat and Borden have such high tolerances you can cut to fit without having the action in hand.

A few months ago I cut a Stolle Panda from 91' that still had identical specs to the new Pandas.
I would have likely agreed with that statement until I did a non shouldered Nucleus that has been labeled the "Death Ray" 300 WSM for good reason. It shoots SUB 1/4 minute groups at 300 yds using hunting bullets. My last non shouldered is on a Jard 70 action in 7SAUM just shot a .253-300 yd group using hunting bullets. Don't think shouldering it would improve it.

Thanks for all the replies. My original question was prompted by my excellent personal experience with Criterion pre-fit barrels. Just wondering if there are any other factory barrel nut style rifles that share specs with the Savage? I imagine if there is a enough demand for them they will come.

The problem is... that just as there are getting to be some good semi-custom actions that use the Savage small-shank thread pattern... Savage is moving more and more of their actions to the large-shank thread pattern. SMDH

For anyone that may be curious ......I tried the barrel nut that I recently received from PTG for the Ruger American on a few take off barrels i had on the shelf. It did not fit a Savage small shank. It ran on to the threads smoothly and with no issues on a Tikka 595 barrel and a Ruger Precision (makes sense). I had a couple of other barrels that weren't marked but their o.d. was too large.
