Prarie dog shooting bench

It boils down to priorities. Stability vs pivoting is a tradeoff. Just a fact. Portability can be a major factor as well. And of course price figures into the equation. If a person has the skillset to design and build something that minimizes the compromises, that’s super but now figure your time into the considerations.

It’ll all subjective, really. In a perfect world all the options would be available for test drives in the field.

This forum is a nice change of pace, place to learn. Good shooters with practical advice about things.

As an Iowa guy trying to learn about P Dogging and what kind of bench to build. I just want to say thanks to the guys with good advice and explanations about why and how.

I'll just add that for target shooting or working up loads, a static fixed bench with legs works, but if you intend to go afield for pd's or ground squirrels, the pivoting feature is just about a must-have or you'll spend much of your shooting time dinking about moving the bench, the seat and your rifle/rest on the bench to acquire targets that seem to always appear in the direction the rifle is not pointing. From experience, it's very frustrating. (Anyone here remember the "Roto-Bench" from the early 90's?)

I'm certainly no expert, but have been at this since 1968 and have learned a few things in that time.

My solution is/was the BR Pivot. Not the only game in town, but has the much needed pivot feature for field enjoyment and not frustration. For pd's and the like, any pivoting bench is better than a fixed leg bench as anyone who's been at this for any length of time will admit.

Nice!!!

I certainly agree with your comments about the absolute necessity of rotation. Anyone that has shot sage rats in Oregon knows rotation and elevation can increase your success. Five of us all using the same "home shop design" rotating benches, mounted on truck plat forms have shot Montana gophers at over 500 yards. Mike got one at well over 600 yards. Dismounting the bench is quick and easy if we need to shoot from the ground or we swap vehicles. We are able to secure the benches if we need to move, or remove the table if driving at highway speeds. I've only got a couple of years on you, but I'm somewhat limited now, I haven't been to Montana for 3 years. But I'm looking for some Rock Chucks here in Central WA. I did see one on Feb. 3, that is earliest I've seen one.
Tite groups!
