Praire Dog Hunting Why do you shoot them?

Winter just keeps holding on around here... but soon we'll have some nice days and I'll be able to go zap a few pdogs. :)

I shot a few back in feb when a nice day happened. ... but it’s not been nice since. lol

that’s a cool air rifle by the way.

Do they carry it? I thought it was the fleas that live on pdogs that carry it?

The fleas get it from the blood they suck out of the p-dog, then transmit it to another p-dog when they bite it. So I would not want to get bitten by a p-dog. But having seen how a crippled one will sink its teeth into your boot sole if you put it close, I would not be grabbing any live p-dogs with my hands, even with gloves on.

I'm in perfect agreement. Dirty little devils are best left right where they fall.

As a farm boy I was flabbergasted the first time I saw the amount of damage they do to the ranches. I can certainly understand why the ranch owners want them shot out or poisoned out. Heck, gophers in the hay fields are bad enough but nothing compared to the damage those stinking prairie dogs do.

I had the chance to shoot them on a ranch in SD. Being from the East, it was a treat for this groundhog hunter. There were so many that a rifle barrel surely can get hot. I found my challenge was to let them get lined up and shoot more than one with one shot. My best was three with one shot. What a hoot it was, a life memory that I will carry for a long time. Even was lucky enough that day to get a couple of rattlesnake rattles.

I like to 'hunt' pdogs because then I can jump on the net to my favorite forums and brag about how many thousands of rounds I shot, that I hit close to one at 1000yds once and take pictures of them all blown up to post with the above. I giggle when I get to open a gate but not as much fun closing them. Also I get to FINALLY get rid of my years stash of pop and beer cans, cig butts, cleaning patches and food wrappers. I leave all my brass lay and all my scrap brass from yrs of reloading. IN FACT sometimes I even go to my local shooting range and pic up anything I can find to take along and scatter all over. It makes it look like a war zone and I look like a stud with my camo's on and a goofy hat, I look like one of them 'Spec Ops' guys on Call of Duty when I carry my assault rifle with a 'banana clip' and when many of my friends are with me I even put my black make up on! ...and don't tell anybody but sometimes I get to skip a bullet into a cow.lol I am doing that country favors because then their local kids don't get to learn bad habits with those dangerous guns. But But this one time after I got out of Band Camp and me and my friends packed up our Cadlac SUV and a big trailer with our new sidexsides and we went to flyover land with all of our $5K shooting sticks and dressed in our favorite camo 'outfits' and walked into cafe's, convenience stores, bars and such and scattered $10 and $20 bills around like we were CIA agents in a 3rd world country buying intel, boy it was fun. Sure can't wait to do it again and take some more dead animal pictures. Geez them people love us. Happy killing everybody!

PS-Sometimes I get to see if the tires I bought do good in mud.

Actually the really big holes around here come from badgers.. P-dawg is a badger staple.. I have had em take carcasses off the mound before I was done blastin..

One of the best memories of Standing Rock was the way fence gates are tied with rope. Such an elegant solution. So easy, genius, practical.
Doggone if i can find a photo.

The Prairie Dog obvisly is a rodent not a dog. They are a carrier of the Bubonic Plaque as well as other human and livestock diseases. Always exercise caution in Prairie Dog towns. They are a host to fleas. Here in
Wyoming there was a big kill off 15 years ago. That was from Canine Distemper. Full recovery has not yet occurred.
My favorite Dog rifle has been a the .220 Swift and the .25-06 in the Fall winds. Last year I tried my new build. It is an AR-15 in the .224 Valkyre. I reload the 90 grs bullets. I had a very interesting time with that caliber. After Memorial Day the beginning of my own Dog shoots. The .224 V will ride in the old Jeep. :D

Don’t be lumping everyone into the catagorie. First dog hunt I went on years ago didn’t fire a shot the first two days. Moved portable corral panels and dehorned. The next year we were a bit later and ended up hauling wheat. Been sit down at the kitchen table friends with those folks for 30 years. Some of the neighbors thought we were blood kin, lol.
I know exactly what you describe and despise folks like that. Worked in some type of agriculture for a good bit of my life. Just because the gates open doesn’t mean come on in. Some people just don’t get it.
