PQP Adjustable Rest

Would appreciate thoughts on the PQP mechanical rear rest for rimfire shooting. Our monthly local club matches allow these PQP rests in factory class (factory rifles with magazines) and open class (custom 22 with custom barrels, actions, one piece rests etc). I do ok with my Seb mini rest and a standard rear bag however I do not want to invest in a full blown one piece rest that I could only use in open class. I could use the PQP rest in both factory and open classes. Any experience with these rests is appreciated!!

Thanks much.

Good evening I make one that works really well with the b14r that is what I shoot in ara 50yd matches attached is a picture of it and a front rest Im working on right now for those that don’t like to drive from the back of the rifle just need to finish up a few different tops before I send a few out for testing and feedback I love this stuff

Adam makes some really nice stuff! I’ve seen his rest up close. It will look even better when my gun is setting on it!

Nice work. Look forward to seeing more products from you. Do you plan a one piece rest any time soon? If you do please send me a heads up. Thanks.

Are you planning on using bag squeezers on the front rest?
Yes this picture was taken just confirming front and rear bag size/height I’m planning on a making a three piece bag setup so one of my tops would cover several rifles as it seems that is a common complaint from guys buying a rest then finding the right bag for for the rifle and then if you shoot a chassis gun you need a different bag and so on

Definitely I have a gentleman in our club who is getting ready to switch to unlimited and I’m working on a one piece design for it now so I will keep you up to date

That is good news.

May I make a suggestion? Consider using the top mounting system found on current popular one-piece rest. They use a plate that the tops sits on and two thumb screws. You can easily change from a delrin, roller, or sandbag top just using the thumb screws.

James: Just to second what Mr. Harper had to say. A lot of rest tops use the same attachment pattern to connect to the rest itself. The ones I use mostly are made by Arnold Machine, Randolph and PQP and they all interchange which is a good thing. I greatly dislike proprietary tops as you can't interchange them from one rest to another rest. The pattern for these tops is almost universal so it would be a good idea to use a similar pattern in your design.

Now for a question in your rear rest design. Does the upright connection block to the rifle stock rotate, or is it stationary? Can that block be made in different widths to accommodate varying stock widths? Do you have any intent on eventually making and selling these items? Thanks....

Rick,
Good evening yes the front rest will carry the “universal” mounting pattern to let the shooter utilize what he or she has already purchased previously to work on our front rest so there is no need to continue to buy something if you already have it even though I’m making a dovetail type adjustable top with a three piece bag system to fit from a 3” to a standard hunting rifle stock
The rear rest on the rear block it has a needle thrust bearing under the block to eliminate bind what I found with my rifle was as you sweep your target the gun would hit a point were it would bind and on that shot it would bind and load one leg of the bipod therefore changing the point of impact
Thank you all for the great conversation and brain storming/advice I just started shooting 3-4 months ago and have really enjoyed not only the shooting but the continuing support and advise from other shooters as I travel around from club to club
Last of all yes these will be something I’m going to make and sell in the next month I’m trying to finalize the design and functionality and want to get them in the hands of shooters and get some honest feedback

Thank you for the reply and supplied information. Several years ago I tried to make a rear rest with a "dogbone" top on it. Originally my thought was to have the support platform rotate to follow the front rest thru windage adjustments. I tried a small flat needle bearing in the rest between the top platform and bottom, but I just couldn't make it work properly. I am not sure what I was missing in my design work, but the idea sounded great to me. It could have been in the flat needle bearing size I was using. I came to the conclusion that the surfaces that the bearing rode on really needed to be surface ground for a perfect finish to eliminate roughness, but I only have a small milling machine and no lathe or surface grinder. Eventually I kind of gave up on the idea and just made a prototype non-rotating rear rest for my own use. It works acceptably, but I think there are times at extreme angles where the stock binds in the dogbone causing an errant shot. You would no doubt laugh at my amateur attempt at making a rear rest. It is nothing at all like your finely finished product.

I would greatly like to follow up with you on your progress with your rear rest if you don't mind. If and when you get to the point of selling your rear rest I will be at the head of the line for one. Perhaps you can communicate with me on this via my email at motorcop@wi.rr.com

Sincerely,
Rick Humphreys
