Power Smell Opinion

Someone gave me some IMR 700x pistol power. Bullseye and Vargit I
use has strong smell. This 700x has a very light smell, it shoot good.
Just like hear from someone uses 700x there opinion, thanks.

Most i have found have a solvent smell, usually similar to Acetone
Acetone is used to dissolve Nitrocellulose to work with it.
I have also noticed their smells can be slightly different
Acetone being sweeter vs maybe Toluene or MEK etc
I have at times forget what powder I had in the measure and smelled it and compared the smells to identify which powder was in there, based on the last 2 powders I used

I think over time this simply eveporates out, more quickly if the cap is left off for extended periods
You could run a stringer of your given powder next to a stringer of same powder and light it off and compare - to at least see if there is any noticeable difference in burn.

I wouldnt be concerned of the solvent smell evaporating out since this is a natural process over time.

If it smells like solvent, I wouldn't worry, if it smells acrid, or like bleach, a smell that burns your nose... it's bad.

OR, if it is discoloured toward reddish brown…
{Almost always has that bad acrid/bleach smell as well}
Dump it out on the garden and at least the nitrogen in the deteriorating powder will help the soil…

I've been handloading sixty and never really gave it much thought as long as it smells like powder should smell.
