Powders for 22-250

Hi Guys
Was wondering about trying VV powders in my 22-250. Now I fully understand the common advice many will give "shoot with what works" I just developed a load of 39 gr Win 760 with a 50 gr Berger. I am getting 5 shots in the mid to high 3"s with this load. My finished rounds have a run out of .001 max so concentricity is not an issue and yes I have tinkered with seating depth. My question is: do VV powders usually out perform Hogdon, Win, and IMR powders or any others??

Howdy !

For a notional 24" 1-14 .22-250, your choice of WW760 would probably be near ideal for use w/ 55s.
For a VV powder of around that burn rate, VV160 would be one choice.

For use w/ 50s, VV's 24N64 ( "VV155" ) might prove a better choice for use with .224" calibre 50gr bullets.

Your 39 gr load reminds me of my favorite .250-3000 load of 35yr ago... 39gr H380 and Fed LR Match, under Sierra 75s.

In MY experience ( lots of .22-250s, .220 Swift, a large .224" cal wildcat, .250-3000 et al ) I would not say that VV powders uniformly beat or bested IMR or Hogdon products ( now all one big happy family )

My .224" cal wildcat's accuracy load w/ WW760 could be beat on speed by VV160, but VV160 loads could not be made to group better than the WW760 loads ( my loads, my gun ).

These days, IMR 4007 might deserve a try in your .22-250; that is unless you simply are better set for/with VV powder(s). From the burn rate I've read.... it sounds like 4007 would make a great candidate powder for use w/ 50s ( no matter what it might smell, like after firing ).

For MAX load density, you might try IMR4350.
In my .224" cal wildcat ( between .22-250 and .220 Swift in capacity ), IMR 4350 proved to be just stupid accurate under BR-grade 52s.

Both VV160 and IMR4350 measured OK w/ my Lyman powder measure w/ Culver insert.
Yhey had a tendency to occasionally " bridge " in my measure's clear drop tube; but that was no biggy to deal with.

Gonna be damn tuff to improve on a "mid to high 3's" load, no matter what else you try. Plus 760/414 meters better than any VV powder.

Try IMR 4320 it works great in my 22/250 with 55 grain sierras. Ranshot Big Game is a great PD load, flows like water.

vv powders are indeed more costly than most others. i have several 22-250's and have tried about every powder. varget works for me with 50-55 gr bullets. for 60 bergers in a 14 twist kreiger, vv540 prints a small hole every time as long as the TERMPERATURE is stable...vv powders are very temp sensitive in my experience. blew some primers once shooting an accurate feb load in july! a freinds 12 twist kreiger puts 64 bergers into a cloverleaf using vv550. other than powder and charge, seating depth..."off the lands", in my guns determines group size. an observation: the faster the twist, the heavier the bullet, the slower the powder.[/quote] if i can see you, i can touch you. i've tried a few powders but keep going back to a nosler 52gr over 35.5/imr 4064/210fed...wrks v.well in my 700 ss varmint barrel 26" 14tw

I own several 22-250's and a couple AI's and I have found that none of them seem to be finicky what I feed them, I have loaded for dozens of 22-250's have not found one yet that wouldn't shoot 34.0 grains of DuPont 4895 or 38.0 grains of H-380 with 50-55 grain bullets, my best shooting 22-250 shoots a top load of DuPont 4350 and 50 grain V-max bullets in the mid ones to low twos consistently, an occasional flyer probably a miss read wind change or the 5th shot may go 1/2" still not bad for a varmint rifle.

i use imr4007 ssc in my 22/250 1 in 12 twist rpa. 39.5 grains behind a nostler 50 grain bt bullet. and standard cci 200 large rifle primer.

gives 3863 fps average over the chrono in my 24 inch barrel. and that isn't flat out mind but it's the most accurate load.

i have gone up to 40 grains and 40.5 but the groups start to open up so went back to 39.5 grains. the es is very good also
so its a powder i like to stick to now and it gives good case fill.


only downside i have found ! its a very dirty powder, compared to the vit powders

Just thought I would inquire since from what I hear VV powder is supposed to be the top choice of BR shooters. Think I will stick with Win 760. Funny thing....I've heard and read how some BR shooters feel our "domestic" powders can't even compare to VV powders. Guess that's not the case.

If you are shooting a 6mm PPC with a 66-68 gr bullet in a 13.5-14" twist 21- 3/4" bbl ...then 133 seems like the way to go....but I bet some of the better shooters (not the lemings) culd get several other powders to work just as good....and dont forget Hodgdon and Alliant powders are not domestic either .....and I wonder about the WW powders now...what works in a fuel dragster is not what will work best in a Dodge pickup.....Roger

Hi there...I've owned and reloaded 250's for about 35 years now. I've tried lots of powders. The VV N150 and N550 are very good stick powders but not quite the accuracy of H380. I was out at thr range yesterday with a friend I got started reloading about 10 years ago. He has 2 250's. At 213 yards he shot a very small tight group...about 5 covered by a nickel or quarter. I asked what powder he was using....4007. I've never tried it but would sure look at it now. Best Wishes and have fun.

I ran H380 for years and then switched to Reloader 15 for a couple years, but I'm back to H380. It meters perfectly and the accuracy always amazes!

I have had great luck with ww748 and aa2015 and h380,shall I go on,LOL Actually there are lots of powders that work real well in the 22-250. Get ken waters pet loads books right here off the accurate shooter store.Best books I have ever read on reloading.

I tried H380 but my 22-250 does better with RL-15 or 4064. I use the 4064 for the 40gr & RL for 50-55gr. I seem to have more luck with RL-15 in almost everything I try.

To answer this question, No.

You already seem to have a really good load. But how does it do @ 200? @ 300? @400?

That's where the powder bullet combo tells the truth. Many loads developed

with temp sensitive powders like W760 crap out at the worst time. Hot barrel,

hot day, charging P-Dogs, etc. If I was going to experiment with any other powder in the 22-250

it would be IMR 8208. My go to powder for the 22-250 in Winter only is IMR 4064. Great out to 300 yds.

Sounds like you have what most aspire to get already. an accurate load.
