What powders for 22-250 Ackley Imp

Hey guys,

I just put together a 22-250 Ackley Imp. 26" criterion barrel with a 9 twist. I'm looking to push a 53 V-max to the magic 4,000fps. What are some of the powders I can try to get there?

I have not, I started with H414 and still use it. Lots of people use H4350 with great success, typically with 75 grain A-MAX's.

Sierra's load data and Nosler's

I like a hot load of Varget (Nosler max load), but IMR8208XBR is a very good second choice. Ramshot "Big Game" is also a very
accurate choice if you can find it. POI in cold or hot weather does not change.

Very stable and dependable load out to 600+ yards.

alright, I do have both of those powders on hand. I have been using 4064 because I have a lot on hand at the moment. But I'm worried some about poi changes going from 60 degrees in the shop and outside to -20. Would like to use a temp stable powder. Is IMR 4320 a possible choice?

I use Varget in my 22-250ai with a 52 grain Hornady BTHP bullet at 3900 fps. Accuracy is great so I stopped there in load development.

52 grain Match bullets are very accurate with burn rate that equals RL15 and Ramshot Big Game witht the latter being best for either 22-250 or Ackley version. You can also expect highest velocity with these powders.

I've had good luck with H380 x 55 gr BT's. Isn't even breathing hard at 3800. To crack 4k, I might look at RL-17, same burn rate as 4350.
If you are using H414 , you need a magnum primer to get good ignition.

I have never had ignition problems with h414 and CCI LR and BR2 primers. Been shooting it for 10+ years with 3 different 22-250 AI's... Never a problem

Another good powder that hasn't been mentioned is AA2700. Al Nyhus said he got noticeably better barrel life with it in his Improved 220 Swift, which is very close to 22-250AI.

VV n-550 ....not the most stable as it is double based like reloader powders.. I have used this powder where load development was done at +30 degrees Celsius and then used the same load as a reference at -20 degrees Celsius and was quite surprised at how little the change was (equivalent to around 2%)

My findings with this powder are it really starts to shine once you get into the upper spectrums of pressure.

these tests were done using the 47 Lapua case for reference .

I've tried most powders between 4064 thru 4350 with 52 and 53 grain bullets in mine. I preferred 760/414 and 380.

Alright thanks for the info guys. Loaded up some CFE223 in virgin Lapua cases during fire forming. It has a noticeably louder report than my 4064 fire forming load and ackley load. Im going to run it over the chrono and see what it tells me speed wise, may try it with a ackley case as well. Along with testing some wet moly'd 53 grain V-Maxes.
