Powder Suggestion for 223.

I am currently shooting a LRPV with Lapua brass, CCI primers, Varget, and 77 grain Sierras. I am trying out 73 bergers and wonder if there is a preferred powder the members would suggest other than Varget. I have a 1 for 7 twist.

I shoot club 200 yd matches with my 223 so I am looking for .25 moa.

I've had great luck with reloader 15 using both 69gr and 77gr Sierra matchkings. I shoot 4 different 223s and 223AI's with the same load. All are consistent 1/4 moa rifles with 23.5gr RL 15 in Winchester and Remington brass behind federal 205M primers. Hope this helps Scott

The other posts hit the nail on the head. +1 for the RE-15. On a side note, what is your intended purpose for the rifle?

Not sure if they are still using it.. but the AMU were using the 73's this year with great results.. I know that they have used N540 predominately in the past.. might want to consider that powder.. Many highpower shooters use Varget. I know that was the powder that I used.. with excellent results..

I have tried them all and Reloader 15 is by far the best all around powder from 55 grains to 80 grains.

For 40-55 grain I love AA2015Br and Reloader 10x.

Get you a 55 grain bullet. Dip a LC case in Reloader 15, shake it off, and seat your bullet...

AA2015 and R-10x same procedure with a 40...

HAHA
Don't laugh...

It really doesn't get better than Varget.

I find that Varget and Reloader 15 are very nearly interchangeable. I think Varget is great also.

I also quit using Varget in all of my 223's, it was just never the best powder in either of my 4 rifles or 2 pistols. My fast twist Savage prefers VV N133 with Berger 73's, I was able to pull more velocity out of VV N140 but the N133 gave much better accuracy. The second best powder that I have tried with this rifle is IMR 8208XBR with the Berger 73's and only increased groups by .15 over the N133.

I used to use a ton of Varget, but it is now only used for heavy bullets in a 45-70

When Varget is not around I am fine with H4895.

Sums it up! I would also add N140. Many have great results with RL15 but I have never tried it due to the suggestions of temperature variations, not trying to start anything! ???

All powders have reactions to temp variations.. I have been using RL15 for years.. It is fine.. It has been my personal experience that extruded powders have less of a reaction to temp changes than ball powders. Just like there is a diff between single and double based powders.

Varget and rl15 are so consistantly accurate is not funny! N140 has posted my best 600 yard score to date though!

Those are all I use for 77 smk and varget and rl15 for any of the vmax offerings.

N140and BR2 primers gave me the lowest es,sd.

We use 25gr reloader15 lapua brass br primer and a 90gr burger vld run 2850 fps this is the same load that Laure Holland came up with and did an artical in target shooter mag. used it to shoot f-class. My friend shot a 564 the first time out. You can find his articals in the archives at target shooter mag.
