powder recommendations for 22-243 w 75g amax ?

Hello experts,

I am looking for more info on powders for 22-243 loads. I bought secondhand a Rem 700, A 3-5 Macmillan stock, badger bottom metal , 26" heavy Hart bbl 1/8 twist, bedded, nicely built in my opinion.

The previous owner had used 80g Amaxes, with 7828ssc & Fed 210 primers. That load did not shoot well - with the rifle came 250 loaded rounds - Lapua brass. I set that aside & shot a few trial 75g Amaxes using RL-22 with OK results.
at 150 yds. then off to SD & ND to shoot P dogs. Had success but now back at the bench to reload.... I have 75g Amaxes & would like to use 'em.

Now I am reloading for next trip & wonder what others would recommend. Seems that a load for .243 win & 75g / 6mm bullets would translate load wise to the 22-243...?

thanx.

Bill -

Howdy !

Apples and oranges...

My high-capacity .224" cal wildcat has a couple less grain capacity than a .22-243.
In my 28" SS 1-8 5-groove K & P, 75 "A"-Max grouped best over 40.5gr AA3100 & FED LR Magnum Match.

As regards I7828:
In my 6mm wildcat of slightly < .243 Win capacity, I7828 grouped/groups well; but is SLOW.
( That's w/ 6mm bullet weights 65-105gr ).

My point: IMHO, your powder choices should fall somewhere in the burn rate range of AA3100 to a tad faster than I7828.

Plugged into QL the information you offered and H4831 SC and Reloader 22 seem like good fits. Of course actual H2O capacity and COL have a big effect on the results.

I had a very good load using a3100and 75 gr amax bullets, but since I can't find any I've started trying other powders. I shot a ladder with H4831 and winchester primers yesterday. 46 grains shot very well but it was a stiff load in my gun. I shot is at about 60degrees and don't know if it would work in our 100+ degree summers. In my 26" barrelled I've found RL25 and 7828 to be to slow. Good luck

Thanks, that is very useful info. Have to interpolate- apples to oranges, both fruit & part of the process. PITA or fun, depending....
4831sc I have on hand. AA 3100 - new to me - sounds worth a try. May try VVN550. I will mention 5 things re 22-243-

1. in one PD trip, COAL to lands prior was 2.770"- went to 2.810". 40 thou per "session". Never seen this much metal burn. Not like a .223. or .308...
2. longest varmint shot ever for me was with this rifle. internet bragging means not so much, so I'll leave it at that.
3. in pulling bullets from the previous owner's loads -Lapua brass, neck tension was way too tight, and inconsistent. Think Win. brass would be alot better, sizing down thickened necks considerably, it seems. but have 250 pcs $ Lapua brass...
4. probably need to get a bushing type f/l die.
5. amaxes in .224, 6mm + .264 hit like a hammer with great accuracy, for me anyway.

thanks, gents.

Tried RL 22 and 25, and H4831. Ended up with RL22, 75Amax. Barrel is a 28" Brux 1-8, I've lost a little throat but nothing like your experiencing. Mine is used on Feral pigs, maybe 1-5 shots quickly and then cool down until next opportunity.

The only real way to find out what will shoot best in your gun is to shoot everything. You are in the right area of the burn rate chart with powder so just try one then another untill you find a load you can live with.
