Powder Options

Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.
Hello, I'm building a 6mm Norma BR to fire 105-107 grain bullets. I see Varget is by far the most popular powder. I'm not in a big hurry as it will be a while before I get it together but have my eye open for some powder. Since I'm not seeing any Varget anywhere, I'm looking for other options. What other powders do people strongly recommend for this round?

As a Newby to this cartridge, your help is greatly appreciated.

I will go from fastest to slowest that work GREAT in the 6mmBR using those weights..

1.) IMR 8208 XBR
2.) H4895
3.) Varget
4.) RL-15
5.) VV N140
6.) VV N540
7.) IMR 4007
8.) VV N150
9.) H4350....

That ought to get you started... ALL of these are superb for what you are looking for...

That was quick. Thanks. Should be able to find something out of that long list. --Jerry

I should add, from personal experience, that the 2 most accurate of those powders are VV N150 and RL-15... If you can't get your rifle to shoot with one of those, you need a new barrel...

You can actually find H380, if you want to give it a try. I haven't used it in your cartridge, but it has wide application, which is generally unrecognized, thus explaining its availability. It meters great, and flows great, for a ball powder. Using Quick Load and optimal barrel time, I have found that H380 hits a "hot load" node at a higher velocity than almost everything else.

Another to use would be Norma 203B. Supposedly the same as RL15. 8)

All of the above are great. I've tried most of them with the 105's
My gun always came back to Varget.

If you can't find anything else believe it or not Levereolution works and is available

+1 on the IMR 4320. In my Savage 12 twist, accuracy was in this order;

IMR 4320
Varget
H4895

With the custom barrels Varget has ruled, although others do excellent as well. That's the cool thing about 6BRs. They just plain shoot, with lots of ammo combinations.

My rifle likes H4895 as well as Varget.

Varget is starting to show up in a lot of shops lately, you might be able to get hold of some before your rifle is done. I've learned to grab it when it shows up, it might be a while before you see it again. This goes doubly for bullets, that's the sticking point for my 6BR. It likes the 107 matchkings and I haven't been able to get any for a long time.

IMR4064 is another one to try.

It showed some promise when I was out of Varget.

I have lots of IMR 4064 for my 308...kindo disappointed in how it meters but I'll look for loads for it. thanks.

Re Benjamin's list (a good one I'd say), Hodgdon has quietly dropped IMR-4007SSC recently it seems.

They have Laurie>>> But I would bet that with a judicious search you could come up with 2-3 years supply, considering the small powder usage of the case.. THEN, MAYBE by that time this silliness of hoarding / supply shortages, will be over...

I was disappointed to hear of its demise - I'm rather fond of 4007. I bought some when it first appeared here in the UK to try with heavy bullets in long-range 308, but the velocity was a bit low. However, I've found several other applications for it.

It's one of the very few H / IMR powders available here right now - because most Brits have never even heard of it, never mind tried it. So I managed to acquire 5 tins just last week which'll keep me going with my various small uses for it for some years I should think.

We're told there will likely be no H4895 / 4350 / 4831 deliveries to the UK this year, and defintely no VarGet at all in 2014.

Tried LeverRevolution in my Dasher with poor results. Ended up I have had to quit shooting because literally there is no powder like Varget or Rel 15 available any more. It was fun while it lasted but like the song goes .;.."It's over now".
