Powder measure comparisson

Hi,

Thought you guys might find this interesting...

I tested my RCBS Uniflow and Harrel Premium with N140, N165 and Vectan SP7,fine ball powder). Throws were all consequent and gentle. No favoritisms for any throw, if it cut a grain it was not omitted from the test etc...

N165 is a pretty coarse grain of powder, lots of cutting when flicking the measure.

N140 is a common grain size

SP7 is a very fine ball-powder I use in my dasher. Feels like silk in the measures.

Don't mind the AVG reading, I set the measures to throw about 30.0 grains. This table is mostly used for my chrony experiments ;)

No surprise, it has always been the powder not the powder measure. What are the red numbers? Cut kernels are part of the normal process, why omitted them. Sometimes they are right on and sometimes way off. What would be interesting is some results from the Lee perfect powder measure on the big grain powder. Good job.

Jim,

Thanks for doing the test throws. I'm not surprised by the results. I'm curious what you used to weigh the charges. Keep in mind that plus/minus 0.1 grain is about the best most common reloading scales, including beam scales can do).

Folks may want to look at the charts on this page. Brand Cole did a test with a prometheus vs. beam scales and a Harrell's to determine their practical accuracy: http://www.6mmbr.com/prometheus.html

FWIW, Brand rated the Harrell's at 0.4 gr "process accuracy".

The red numbers are the high and low throws.

No throws were omitted at all, even when grains were cut.

I use a redding beam scale, find it to be more consistant than my RCBS beam or PACT digital, even though it's a 0.1gr scale). Weighing the same sample 10 times gives me the same number ten times. Not always so with my digital scale. The test is not about the absolute weight of the throw, but more the relative amount from throw to throw. If my 30.0 is actualy 30.1 "for real" is not much of a concern. I just wanted to see if the Harrel was more consequent in throwing charges.

I also have a Harrell's and haven`t been weighing as they have been withing .2 of a grain or so but now that i have a load that is working well, i will try to have them all the same so whether it is 33grs or 32.8 if i start loading and it is 32.8 all the cases i load i want 32.8 especially now that i am shooting 500m as well, in short range 100 & 200 Yard .2 won`t alter point of impact very much in a 30BR but at 550yards it might be 1 or 2 inches .125 of an inch at 100 is .625 at 500
