powder for 45-70 with a 450gr bullet

I want to reload some 45-70 450gr bullets. I can't find what powders are good with the 450gr bullet. If you know or have a site with info, it would be a big help.

What firearm are you loading for? I’ve been using a lot of AA5744, it’s a very versatile powder In 45-70, it’s given me my best accuracy and I can use it in my Marlin or Ruger #1 and adjust accordingly. The other powders mentioned above do a great job too.

In my Marlin 1895SBL, I've found that H4198 worked well with all bullet weights. I have also noticed that faster burning (less bulky) powders may be needed with heavy bullets that consume much of the case capacity.

H4198 is about the best high performance powder according to the numbers. A couple other powders do similar things with heavier bullets like Accurate 2230 and even H4895.
For bullets heavier than 420gr I find that loading them long is pretty beneficial, but that depends on whether one's action will cycle them at those lengths.

Your question is pretty generic.
There is a huge abundance of data out there.
As mentioned what are you loading it for, there are several pressure levels to work with.
Also, jacketed or cast bullets?
Even as big as the case is, it is fairly easy to work with

Try this site very good loading info.

I typically use Berry's 350 grain bullets very accurate and there is a lot more loading powder for them.

I only use the 45-70 for a couple things. 4198 or occasionally 4895 for hot-ish bear defense loads and bullseye w/pistol primers for a game we play every week. It's kinda like bowling but with guns :)

For smokeless loads I've used 3031...both Elmer Keith and trapdoor loads....they are very different pressure levels..the one thing about black is it bumps up

45-70 best powders for 450 gr bullets and for up to 28,000 (25,000 - 28,000) psi chamber pressure and case fill ration 90% to 105 %... 1,400 fps to 1,500 fps +/-

@Zero333 , I’ve shot a fair bit of smokeless in my highwall. My experiences with smokeless rifle powders are that a lot, in fact most, of what you have listed in the above post don’t work well at all. Big volume straight walled cases behave differently. The problem is that the pressure drops off way to fast to get adequate burn from powders that slow. Trying Varget (because I kept a lot on hand) resulted in unburied kernels all down the bore. I’ve never had success with anything slower the range of IMR3031. The range most people find effective is from about AA5744 to IMR3031.

I get the same results and performance in my 50cal smokeless muzzle loader. (In fact I’ve even duplexed a bit there, the old long discontinued IMR SR4959 was the go to booster)

you may have different results but that’s the consensus I see on boards where folks shoot the old big bores, and my experience correlates.

I understand exactly what you mean. I just thought near max / max loads might work just fine with those slower burning powders.
